Bengaluru, Jul 2: There is intense competition among the Congress party MLCs to obtain the position of chief whip in the Vidhana Parishat (Legislative Council) that is vacated after the retirement of R V Venkatesh.
Nominated member MLC Ivan D’ Souza, Raghu Achar and Narayana Swamy from local constituency, Srinivasa Mane from teachers’ constituency are competing for the post of the chief whip.
The Council session will start on July 4 and the position needs to be filled by then. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wants to appoint nominated member Ivan D’ Souza for the post. There is strong opposition for it from MLCs elected from local and teacher’s constituencies. In the circumstances, it may be necessary to sort the matter out with the intervention of high command, it is believed.

Fourteen people had won from local and teachers constituencies. Those fourteen members have sent a letter signed by all of them to Congress chief Dr G Parameshwar with a copy to central AICC requesting to appoint any one of them for the post. They have urged that the nominated member should not be appointed for the post equivalent to cabinet minister.
