Beltangady: Bride-to-be accidentally falls into well, dies

Beltangady, Jul 15: A bride-to-be died after accidentally falling into a well at Perla in Ujire here on Friday July 15.

The deceased has been identified as Savita (26), daughter of Babu Naik and Gulabi, residents of Anekodange, Ujire.

It is said that Savita was drawing water from a 30-ft deep well when she accidentally slipped and fell into it.

Beltangady fire service arrived at the spot and retrieved the body.

Savita was working for Beltangady Mahila Santvana Kendra. Her wedding was supposed to be held next month.

Savita is survived by her parents and three brothers.

Beltangady police have registered a case.

    She survived for so many years even drawing water from same well. Such wells without protective wall around always pose a danger.
    Whatever the case, she was not lucky enough to see the big day of her life. So sad.

    Our Dy.Commissioner has ordered in May to fence or close the quarry pits. Likewise now DC has to issue an order to to fence or construct wall to the wells if they are like Belthangadys case.

    If no boundary wall is built around the well due to poverty, why then village Panchayat and other social organizations( Lions club and Rotary club etc.) are not coming forward to help this type of families. Nowadays we see big big banners of some local leaders by the road sides and plenty advertisements in the local News Papers for the name sake. Where is our society heading to ? It is a normal practice of expressing sympathy by the leaders after occurrence of tragedy. Wake up and serve the society and create awareness among people to take measures for safety. My dear leaders and members of all organizations, try to practice/implement as well what you preach.

    very sad,

    I don't think building a protective wall around well cost more than 5% of digging a well.

    Suppose one can spend around Ra.3500 to 5000/- those days (definitely 30 years back) to dig a well, constructing a wall around using kaat(kappu-kallu) stones which available plenty in mountains and forest area will cost one Rs.350 to 500/- in those days.

    Such a sad incident. May her soul rest in eternal peace and sympathies to the bereaved families and loved ones. Parents lost their only daughter and her three brothers lost their only loving sister.

    RIP Savita, God found an empty place in heaven and to fill it, He took you.
    In my childhood, I heard, our elders were not allowing would-be bride or bridegroom to go near well or dangerous places after some ceremonies. That thing apart, look at the well, it looks so dangerous. In this 21st century, no person had realised to protect people by erecting a wall or some bamboo block at least in the front side. Earlier, many people have fallen, some died and some rescued alive in many other wells. We have chalta hai attitude, but, safety has no substitute.

    look at the well!!! no safety boundry, this is utter carelessness of those who constructed the well. it should be made compulsory all open wells to be constructed with boudry

    I agree. 0.001% money spent on bringing up such a lovely daughter could have been spent on building wall around the well. But she has not fallen in this well when she was a kid. These kind of accidents happen even if there is a wall around. Sad about it. Helmet is important for motorcycle riders. Many of them have died wearing it. It is destiny And called accident.

    John...In Dakshin Kannada in most of the homes you will find same type of well. No protective boundary around. Reason behind forefathers are not so rich on that time..and still continuing on it. Now while constructing new homes..are erecting boundaries around having italian made taps at washroom..with small children's swimming pool.

    Eddie...Who knows what problem arises at home regarding her marriage may be even money matter.
    Even having three brothers in some homes difficult to accumulate money for marriage. May be she is thinking over it and slipped into well. It's not the first time she is drawing water..and due to rain even wooden become slippery.

    As Dev said here that Savita had drawn water a many times, but due to thinking over the problem at home, she may have slipped into the well.

    Yes indeed, many of our Indian girls kicked very good marriage proposals when they saw tear in their father's eyes. Many girls never allowed their parents to pay capitation fees for MBBS admission knowing parents sacrifice. There are many such examples. The girl never forgets her parents till they are alive.
