Mangaluru: Mayor instructs officials to remove unauthorized petty shops

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 22: Expressing dissatisfaction at the fact that officials have failed to remove unauthorized petty shops and street vendors although a decision in this regard was passed by the general session of the city corporation, city mayor, Harinath, instructed them to implement this decision forthwith. He gave them strict instructions not to make any compromises as far cleanliness of the city is concerned.

He was speaking about the steps needed to be undertaken towards 'Swachh Survey 2017' as part of Swachh Bharat Mission, at a meeting convened by the city corporation council here on Thursday July 21.

Harinath noted that with each passing day there has been increase in the number of street vendors, which are creating problems. He said that people are asking the corporation to undertake demolition drive to clear the city of illegal petty shops and street vendors. He told them that they are not justified in shirking from their responsibilities.

Praveen, representing Unique Waste Processing Pvt Ltd, who participated in the meeting, said that a unit that scientifically processes poultry waste and converts it into a material that can be used as an alternative for animal food,is being set up in the city. This is will be helpful for the corporation too as the current procedure of burying poultry waste is facing problems because of paucity of space. He added that at present, about 35 tonnes of poultry waste is being produced in the city.

Deputy mayor, Sumitra, and chairperson of corporation's health standing committee, Kavita Sanil, were present.

There should be proper planning for foot path and petty shop. Petty shop should not block the foot path. Most of petty shops are unauthorised. Authorities should construct petty shops at the corner of the road having international standard (not Gudangadi with rusted sheets & old gunny bag hanging). It should be a model to the rest of the state and people start appreciating it. A clean toilet next to petty shop is advisable. These shops can be alloted to ex-service men for nominal rent. Proper foot path, petty shops, toilets and proper infrastructures like multi level parking are stepping stone for smart City.

Dear Respected Mayor good job by removing the unauthorized petty shops and street vendors. You should also stop owners of shops in the Central Market area who use the footpath to stock their merchandise and vehicle mechanics who work on the footpaths. Most dangerous are the builders who use the footpath while erecting a building they should be fined or a notice should be sent to them, for using the public footpath. Please do see to it Mr.Respected Mayor so that Mangaluru will be a better place to live in.

Good decision taken by our Mayor. All future Mayors should also take similar action during their term. Re-introduce Tiger. At the same time make efforts to provide them a suitable place elsewhere.

    Mr Mayor,
This is a Good step and it is a fair decision to remove the unauthorized establishments and shops functioning to keep the city in order.........But it applies to all........Including the illegal buildings which are built on govt land & within city limits.
If you have GUTS......Go ahead and demolish those buildings first & then talk about poor footpath vendors....

The street vendors & petty road side shops should be immediately removed. If these practice allowed the Roadside petty shops will claim the land belongs to them. Similar issue has happened earlier. They run their trade for sometimes then claim that place to be theirs in connivance with local leaders.
