10,000 Indian workers facing food crisis in Saudi Arabia: Sushma

New Delhi, Jul 30 (IANS) : In what has come as a shocking development, over 10,000 Indian workers in Saudi Arabia are facing a "food crisis", External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Saturday.

"The number of Indian workers facing food crisis in Saudi Arabia is over Ten Thousand," Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet.

"It is not 800 as is being reported," she said.

She appealed to the over three million-strong expatriate Indian population in the Gulf kingdom to "help your brothers and sisters".

"There is nothing mightier than the collective will of Indian nation," Sushma Swaraj said.

Earlier on Saturday, she said that a large number of Indians have lost their jobs in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

"The employers have not paid wages, closed down their factories," she said, adding that Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh would be going to Saudi Arabia to sort out the issue.

She stated this in response to a tweet from a man who said that over 800 jobless Indians have been starving for three days in Jeddah.

"We have asked the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to serve you food in Jeddah," Sushma Swaraj said.

"My colleague @Gen_VKSingh is reaching Saudi Arabia to sort out all such matters," she stated.

She said that while the situation in Kuwait was manageable, matters were much worse in Saudi Arabia.

Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar would be taking up the issue with the Saudi and Kuwaiti authorities, she said.

"I assure you that no Indian worker rendered unemployed in Saudi Arabia will go without food," Sushma Swaraj said in another tweet.

"I am monitoring this on hourly basis," she added.

Following this, the man who had tweeted about the situation in Jeddah, again tweeted pictures of Indians queuing up for food.

While Saudi Arabia has over three million expatriate Indians, there are over 800,000 of them in Kuwait.

This suffering may not be restricted to these 10000 from India, there could be a greater number from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Srilanka and from SE Asian region as well. If that is so, this is a bigger humanitarian issue requiring urgent international attention ! Governments need to escalate this to UNO bodies as well.

The efforts of the govt. is admirable. To work with the Saudi Govt. to manage over 10,000 or a 100,000 odd people. Their efforts must be credited for and appreciated.
Jobs are lost due to circumstances that mayn't be avoidable. Creation of jobs in India is a total different issue.
But the Diplomacy that Sushma Swaraj shows here is really appreciated and gives a sense of security to the Indian expats living in Saudi and Kuwait.

Thanks for helping the needy Susmaji. Govt must find out a permanent solution. Why so many went jobless at once. Better to bring them to India and rehabilitate them and later they find the job when economy improves. How long can you feed them in foreign country? Better for them to bring back and support.

The writing on the wall has been there for quite some time. Definitely over the last 12 months.

If people read the reports between the lines, the mega-companies themselves were commenting that the Government was not releasing the contract dues. Those reports become all the more credible because some Governments in the region had to borrow money to balance the budgets.

Borrowing by these Governments is something unheard of.

So, the issues will get more complex in the coming months/years. It may be ideal for people to start thinking about a plan B.

The truth of the matter is, when the going gets tough for the locals, the migrant labourers end up suffering more.

What is really sad to note is that the Indian Government has no plans for the labourers who provided the billions in foreign exchange all these years.

Indian govt cant stand up to mighty company's like bin laden, saudi oger and sedar... they have duped salarys and service money of thousands of employees in the name of recession..
people do manage to get food but they are hanging on with a hope of getting unpaid salarys and service money which is life savings for most of the employees without it they will literally die once they come back to native place.
(Saudi authorities are just watching and not holding the company's accountable)..
Indian ministry should intervene and get all the dues settled before they give them one way air ticket..

The protector of immigrants, the Indian Embassy/Consulate and Indian government should enact strong laws and most importantly enforce them. Of all the major communities that immigrate to the ME I feel Indians are the most unprotected and exploited especially those who do menial work.

I don't think people are starving without food. Five pieces of small cubus is merely one riyal Indian rupees 17.50 anybody can afford. Indian works are not getting salary payment may be true. Many companies have been closed and salaries are not paid or paid or sent exit bare hand.

Govt of India have to stop sending ordinary labour category people and skilled labourers to Saudi Arabia. Some Manpower agencies forcing the people to work day and night but they never bother about paying the salary. Even KSA govt also not taking non payment of salary issue seriously. Since KSA economy is going down due to decline of crude oil price, people are losing their jobs on daily basis. Modi govt have to take the measures to create the job opportunities in India. Good luck.

Yesterday also we visited other camp and delivered same amount of food items and there also around 500 Indian workers are suffering from same situation.

In coming days situation is going to be more worse in Saudi Arabia without any business and cash flow...as their oil revenue is drastically came down as this country only dependent on crude oil...due to green energy invention and Solar energy emerging at world all over and more over this country meddling in one of costliest unsuccessful war with Yemen and Syria...which was another major factor. IMF already warmed Saudi Arabia at beginning of 2016 that within 4-5 years KSA will run out of cash!!!!!!!!!

The biggest gas company in the U.S., the Exxon Corporation's profit margin was declined 59%, the worst in 17 years. Likewise the oil companies around the world are suffering with massive profit crash, the stock holder lost billions of dollars. The shale oil revolution in North Dakota created high paying jobs, now those towns are vacant.
