Bengaluru, Aug 19: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission has recommended for the suspension of five police officers in connection with alleged atrocities on protesting farmers at Yamanur in Dharwad district. The officers whose suspension is sought are Dharwad deputy superintendent of police, H M Olekar, Navalgund circle police inspector, Arunkumar B Happalli, sub-inspector, Bheemanna Maruti Soori, police sub-inspector, Shivayogi Yallappa, and reserve force inspector, Shivananda Girimallappa.
Acting president of the commission, Meera Saxena, in her letter, also asked the governnent to provide training to police over the manner in which they should behave when arresting the accused as per the guidelines provided by Supreme Court.
"These officers did not take any precautionary measures beforehand. During the incidents, without taking care, atrocities were unleashed on women and senior citizens. Therefore, these officers deserve to be subjected to disciplinary action," the commission said in the letter addressed to additional chief secretary.
It may be recalled that protesting against the dismissal of interim application of Karnataka over Mahadayi river water distribution dispute, villagers had protested and the police had used force to quell the agitation. A large number of farmers were jailed in this incident.
At the same time, speaking to media persons at a programme held at Kannada Bhavana here on Thursday, state director general of police, Omprakash, said that action against erring officers will be taken after the receipt of inquiry report. As some of the officers have been subjected to action already and as investigation is on relating to the incident, he said it would not be desirable to discuss the issue further at this stage.
