CPI-M denounces India-US logistics agreement

New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Tuesday denounced the India-US military logistics agreement, saying it has compromised India's sovereignty.

"The Politburo of the CPI-M strongly condemns the signing of the logistics support agreement between the United States and India which will allow the American armed forces to access and use Indian military bases," the Left party said in a statement.

"The Modi government has compromised on Indian sovereignty and surrendered its strategic autonomy by signing such an agreement with the most powerful imperialist country in the world," it said.

The agreement, called the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA), was signed between India and the US on Monday in Washington, in the presence of visiting Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter.

"By signing such an agreement, India has acquired the formal status of a military ally of the US. Under this agreement, the US air force and navy can use Indian naval and air bases for logistics support, refuelling and services on a regular basis," it said.

The CPI-M expressed concern that the US armed forces can utilise Indian military bases while conducting military operations in these parts of the world.

"All patriotic Indians will reject such a subordinate role to US imperialism," it said.
