Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (KM)
Mangalore, Dec 24: Beary language deserves an extensive research, comprising of its development in the past and the path it has to tread in the coming days. The research on it should cast light on truth, however bitter it may be, said B A Moiddin, former minister.
He was delivering the inaugural address at the convention to launch research on Beary community, language, literature and culture, organised by Akhila Bharata Beary Parishat, held at Hotel Moti Mahal here on Monday, December 24.
In the field of literature difference of opinion is not a rare phenomenon, but rejecting or accepting the merit of arguments is up to the people. The research should aim at revealing the truth, even if it is against the popular beliefs. It must also be ensured that the biased religious elements must not crop up while carrying out the research, he suggested.
Beary community is a small Muslim community, concentrated mostly in undivided Dakshina Kannada, which has its own singular cultural identity. It has been enjoying an inseparable bond with its counterparts in the region, despite going through trials and tribulations both politically and socially, he added, reiterating the need for immediate and authentic research on Beary language, culture and tradition.
Ruling out the most controversial argument that Beary is a derived language (dialect) of Malayalam, he said it has borrowed words from various neighbouring languages, such as Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu and foreign languages like Arabic. The unique tradition and cultural identity of the language must be brought to the fore through the research without causing damage to the secular fabrics of the region, he added.
B M Farooq, president, Beary's Welfare Association Parishat, Bangalore , presided over the function while J Hussein, convener, Akhila Bharata Beary Parishat, delivered the introductory address.
Among those present was Dr B K Yusuf, president, Beary's Cultural Forum, Dubai.
