M'lore: KBOO Demands Regulated Working Hours for Officers

Mangalore, Dec 26: At the 25th conference of the Karnataka Bank Officers’ Organisation (KBOO) held here recently, the members raised their objections and expressed their resentment at the long working hours they were put through as part of their official duty.

The release from the KBOO referring to the charter of resolutions stated that after due deliberations, the conference unanimously adopted a resolution to mark their dissent against the working conditions and undue pressure of work. In fact the conference made a demand to the Indian Banks Association (IBA) to regulate the officer's working hours.

A KBOO press release said "It can be understood that in exceptional circumstances the officers may have to work beyond working hours of a branch or office. But such work should be adequately compensated”. In this matter, the release rued the fact that the IBA had not heeded the spirit of agreement.

With regard to the introduction of compassionate appointment scheme, the conference adopted another resolution. Pointing out that the scheme was a social security measure, the resolution said the scheme intended to provide relief to members of the family who had lost their sole wage earners. The scheme could not be replaced by any other type of relief or compensation, it declared.

The resolution states “Recent attitude and approach of banks is to harass the legal heirs of the deceased in all possible ways.” Although the Union Government had cleared the scheme of compassionate appointment, it did not amount to any meaningful restoration of compassionate appointment nor improvement in the compensation package for those affected, it added. In view of this the conference demanded from the IBA to discuss the issue in detail with the unions and finalise the schemes at the earliest in the larger interest of employees and officers alike.

With regard to the pension scheme, the conference requested the IBA to take necessary steps to offer one more option to bank officers to change over to the pension scheme. Terming the IBA’s figure of cost of servicing the pension at Rs. 22,500 crore as hypothetical, the conference said IBA had been trying to evade negotiations. It noted that the said IBA figure had been challenged by union, however the issue was still hanging in balance.
