MP: Minor Dalit rape victim attempts self-immolation

Itarsi (MP), Oct 13 (PTI): A Dalit rape victim at a village in Madhya Pradesh's Itarsi allegedly tried to immolate herself by pouring kerosene, fearing that an accused in the case, who came out on bail recently may kill her, police said today.

The minor girl suffered 40 per cent burn injuries in the incident yesterday and is being treated at a hospital here, they said, adding her condition is stated to be stable and out of danger now.

She took the extreme step at her residence in Nayagaon, around 15 km from here, out of the fear that the accused would harm her, Itarsi Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Anil Sharma said.

She was raped in February this year following which two accused were arrested, he said.
The main accused in the case is still lodged in jail but one of his accomplices (Anil Yadav) was released on bail nearly two months back and since then the victim is gripped with a fear that he may take revenge or might kill her, Sharma said.

It appears that in a disturbed state of mind yesterday, she poured kerosene to immolate herself and suffered 40 per cent burn injuries, he said.

Soon after the incident yesterday, Yadav was arrested and booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, he said.

Police and social organisations were helping the victim and her family in all possible manner, the SDOP said.

Madhya Pradesh once again has been ranked number one by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for the maximum number of rape cases.
In 2014, the state recorded 5,085 rape cases. Half of the women who were raped were minors, reported NDTV. Rajasthan ranked second with 3,770 cases, closely followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra with 3,468 and 3,465, respectively.

With a crime rate of 10.4 in rape cases against women, Gwalior in the central state of Madhya Pradesh does not boast of a good record. 2014 figures of the NCRB also showed Gwalior among the top cities in the country figuring high in crimes against women. Gwalior recorded 188 cases of assault against women. The state is currently ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has had consecutive terms since 2002.

Sinking the state of Madhya Pradesh in further shame is the presence of its capital city Bhopal in the list of most unsafe cities for women. The city, known for its pristine lakes and wide gardens, saw 133 rape cases and 322 cases of assault outraging the modesty of women. The crime rates were 7.1 and 17.1 respectively.

"Heart of India" bleeding the women of India at it peak.
