Mangalore: XITC Celebrates 23rd Annual Day

Mangalore, Dec 31: Xavier Industrial Training Centre (XITC) celebrated its 23rd Annual Day recently. A Mass was offered by Fr Paul Pinto of Paneer Church.  Special remembrance was made of the founding members recognizing their yeoman services to the trust. Later a cultural programme by the students guided by the teachers was presented to the joy of all present. J J V Fernandes welcomed the large gathering. Dr Derrick Lobo, a well-known local philanthropist, recently retired from a key position in UNO and WHO was the chief guest while his wife Patsy Lobo gave away the prizes. Sudhir Raj B Kotian, principal of the Institution presented the annual report for the academic year 2007 – 08. The vote of thanks was proposed by secretary F M Lobo.

Xavier Industrial Training Centre (XITC) is the first educational venture of Xavier Educational Trust, Regd, (XET); founded in 1984 at Mukka Welfare Society’s, humble premises, by J J V Fernandes as chairman, F M Lobo as treasurer and the late Oswald Kamath as secretary.

The year 1992 saw it relocated at Assaigoli, Konaje on a 4.38 acre plot leased out by Karnataka Jesuit Society.  At present this institute offers five ITI courses in Electrician Trade, Electronic Mechanics, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics and Welding Trades; currently there are 135 students and 15 teaching staff.  The courses are affiliated to ‘National Council for Vocational Training. (NCTVT), New Delhi.

The premier objective of the trust is to provide state-of-the-art training facilities to deserving students from the marginalized sections of society.  The target being to create an efficient pool of skilled, honest and disciplined technicians in the service of modern industry and society at home and abroad.  The aim is a calculated process to uplift the living standards of lower economic strata of local residents

The recent addition to the training scheme is a full-fledged Motor Driving School, opened on May 10, 2007; the fees are very nominal benefiting the many learners using this service now running smoothly. Efforts are at an advanced with the NCTVT for the introduction of a comprehensive Motor Mechanics Course from the academic year July 2008. Many more advanced courses are planned in the future tailored to the needs that the national growth parameters as demand by industry and public.
