Mangaluru, Nov 3: In an incident reported on Thursday November 3 at Padukonaje near Shirtady, cattle traffickers allegedly attempted to mow down policemen with their vehicle and managed to fled. The police fired one round in the air in an effort to stop the traffickers.
Though the accused escaped, the police succeeded in seizing their Qualis vehicle and rescuing seven cows.
Moodbidri inspector Ramachandra Nayak and three policemen, on receiving definite information of illegal transport of cattle from Kashipatna in Beltangady to Shirtady were inspecting vehicles near Padukonaje cross at about 4 am. The accused in the Qualis who saw the police tried to flee, but they soon noticed SI Dejappa and two policemen inspecting vehicles near Maroor cross. The traffickers again drove to Padukonaje cross.
When the inspector Ramachandra tried to block the Qualis with the police vehicle, the accused tried to run their vehicle on the policemen. The policemen saved themselves by jumping into a rainwater drain. As the accused tried to flee, the inspector fired one round of bullets into the air, which frightened the traffickers who then got down from the Qualis and escaped through the nearby fields. The police managed to observe the faces of the accused clearly during the incident, but they are yet to be identified.
Pairs of gloves and two mobile phones were recovered from the Qualis.
Charges of obstruction to police duty, attempt to murder, violation of law against cattle slaughter, and violence to animals have been filed against the accused.
