Moodbidri, Nov 18: Well-known theatre personality, Dr B Jayashree, opined that people should, along with pursuing their studies for a living, also must enrich their lives through practice of art and culture. She asked the students to try to draw the attention of their parents towards the fact that one can earn fame and name even through art and culture. She was speaking after inaugurating the annual 'Vidyarthi Siri' organized by Alva's Education Foundation at Vidyagiri here on Thursday November 17.
"We have to own our culture, our land, and our language. If we forget Kannada, our learning of other languages and things cannot fill this void, and we fail to properly express our inner feelings. We need to question ourselves as to what we have done for our country in return for the freedom we enjoy. You have to fulfill the aspirations of your parents, but at the same time, follow your own instincts too," she exhorted. She lamented about the fact that exploitation of women has been continuing even now.
Ananya, student of Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara English medium high school, Beltangady, who was the overall president of Vidyarthi Siri, felt that an education which does nor inspire students to chase their own dreams, ideas and thought processes, which does not instill a confidence among them to stand on their own legs, and which does not help them to follow refinement in lives, is wasteful. She said the student should plead with the concerned and fight to change the educational system into something that everyone needs to lead a life rich with culture and new ideas. She called upon parents to desist from watching TV serials and spend quality time with their children. "Never compare your children with others and undermine their confidence. Everyone has some hidden talent, everyone is unique, and if they are encouraged, they can lead a life that is full of happiness and contentment," she added.
Dr Mohan Alva felicitated Ananya. B Ashwini Baliga from Bantwal welcomed. Sharat proposed vote of thanks. Rachanachandra presented the programme.
Krishi Siri: Alva's Krishi Siri was inaugurated by Mijaruguthu Anand Alva. Former minister, K Amarnath Shetty, extended best wishes. Director of Veterinary and Fisheries University Bidar, Dr Shivaprasad S N, spoke on the occasion while Dr M Mohan Alva spoke of plans to hold 'Krisi Siri' on a large scale in 2018. MLA, K Abhay Chandra Jain, who was the chief guest, asked farmers to also take up allied activities to remain financially stable.
Chief guest of the programme, Dr L H Manjunath, executive director of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Rural Development Project, called upon farmers not to sell their agricultural fields for setting up industries. He said that buying of farm land serves the interests of land mafia. "Farmers are known as protectors of culture. But there is no protection for farmers now. 54 percent of our people depend on agriculture, but theirs is a feeble existence. Because of sub-division and fragmentation of agricultural land, number of farmers is increasing, but agriclture as a profession is suffering. One of the mistakes farmers are committing is failure to adopt to modern technological advances in farming and not getting benefit of modern researches," he stated. He decried the attitude of a section of farmers to remain cynical about modern advances in farming.
Veteran agricultural expert, Dr L C Soans, deputy director of animal husbandry, Dr Tippeswamy, assistant director of agriculture, Kempe gowda, director of Agriculture Science Research Station Brahmavar, Dr Hanumantappa and others were present.
Cini Siri: Well-known Sandalwood director, Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar, noted that a class of people have a tendency to overlook contributions made to the society by movies. Speaking after inaugurating Cini Siri at 'Vidyarthi Siri' dais, he called upon the concerned to close the yawning gap now witnessed between literary and cinema fields. He felt that like other languages, Kannada writers should contribute to the cinema in a big way. He noted that visual media has taken a strong place in one's life now, and that the small screen has been encroaching on the culture of reading. He called upon people to use this media in a creative and educationally beneficial way. "As a whole, visual media is neither bad nor good. It depends upon how we use it," he added. He felt that students can use camera and technology to create short films about problems faced by them and send them to festivals. He also thought that students can master the media and drive away the all-encompassing feeling prevalent now that media is in the hands of inept people.
Dr M Mohan Alva asked the students to nurture a concern to keep our culture alive for posterity. He said that the 'Vidyarthi Siri' which was organized at district level now, will be expanded to state level next year, if the plans being drawn up now materialize.
