Afghanistan urges UN to remove sanctions against Hekmatyar

Kabul, Dec 12 (IANS): Two months after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed a peace accord with Hezb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Kabul on Monday urged the UN Security Council to remove the militant group and its leaders from the sanctions list.

Official spokesman Tawab Ghorzang said the formal letter by the Afghan government was sent through the Foreign Affairs Ministry to the sanctions committee of the Security Council, Khaama reported.

The party had earlier requested the government to assist in removal of sanctions imposed against Hezb-e-Islami leaders.

This comes as a delegation of the UNSC sanctions committee visited Afghanistan some weeks ago and met Afghan leaders to discuss the prevailing situation in the country.
