Mangalore, Jan 26: If a question like what the most fascinating thing in the world could be asked, the answers given may vary from grape to gooseberry. However flowers could also be an answer, appealing large number of people who attempt to give answer to the question.
Realizing this notion, the department of horticulture organized exhibition of flowers and fruits, in association with DK Zilla Panchayat, district administration, Mangalore City Corporation and ‘Siri’ Totagarike Sangha at Kadri Park, here from Friday, January 25 to Monday January 28.
The exhibition went far beyond the paradigm of traditional exhibition of fruits and flowers, as it casts light on other avenues closely associated with horticulture and agriculture sectors, since it displayed things that nothing to do with fruits and flowers in direct application, like thresher, drip irrigation, chuff cutter (lawn mower) and other tools. The primary aim of displaying such tools is to educate farmers about the latest innovations and technology, who can make healthy benefits by availing the machines in fields, said a sales executive from Varsha Associates, while speaking to daijiworld correspondent.
Though the inaugural ceremony was scheduled at 4.00 p m, visitors started thronging the parks at 3.00 p m, surprisingly majority of them were not cursory visitors. Visitors were seen discussing the displayed items and pre-occupied in taking down information. The exhibition was not just attractive but also informative. Detailed charts were displayed in the back drop of the fruits and vegetables
Another lesser known attraction was that very few stalls like the one set up by Pilikula Nisarga Dhama Society bought many plants to sell. The stall got few indigenous plants like little peny wort, Arjun, Kokam. It was also exciting to know that many endangered plants like Ashoka, False Nut Meg are also on display. The stall also sells overseas plants like Thuja and other rarely seen plants.
The department of horticulture took all the measures to ensure that the exhibition would not be another exhibition as it has also put up a stall where an official from the department has been assigned the task of educating visitors about the new technology like vermicide, which can sufficiently replace chemical fertilizers in the long run.
Stalls also sell home-made pickles, papads and other eateries. The stalls also sell nighties and other garments. Thus, the exhibition promoted the industries that have least to exchange among themselves. This is mainly to encourage home industry, a marketing executive informed.
KP Sucharita Shetty, Zilla Panchayat, inaugurated the exhibition.
