PM likens parties opposing note ban to Pak helping terrorists

Varanasi, Dec 22 (PTI): In a scathing attack on opposition for stalling Parliament over demonetisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today alleged they were trying to "rescue the corrupt" like Pakistan gives cover fire to terrorists to cross border and said the note ban will expose the ''''kala dhan'''' (black money) as well as ''''kale mann'''' (ill-intentions) of many.

"Many people say I had not taken account the consequences of this huge step. In fact, the only thing that I could not take into account was the brazenness with which many political parties and leaders will come to the rescue of the corrupt. But I am happy that this drive aimed at eliminating ''''kala dhan'''' has exposed so many ''''kale mann''''," Modi said.

The Prime Minister, who was on his first tour of his Lok Sabha constituency after Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes were demonetized on November 8, was speaking at a function organised inside the Benares Hindu University campus.

Charging the opposition parties, who have been attacking the government over demonetization, with "brazenly standing in support of the corrupt and the dishonest", Modi compared their stalling of parliamentary proceedings during the latest session to "firing at the borders by Pakistan in a bid to provide cover to infiltrators".

He also hit back at former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and P Chidambaram, saying their argument that promoting cashless economy was futile due to poverty, illiteracy and electricity not reaching villages in the country "exposes" their own report card.

Reacting to his predecessor Manmohan Singh''''s assertion in the Parliament that a cashless economy was not feasible for the country where nearly 50 per cent of people were poor, the Prime Minister said, "I wonder whether he was giving his own report card by admitting the dismal situation.

"After all, he has not just been the Prime Minister for two terms and a Finance Minister previously. Since the 1970s he has been holding key positions".

Taking on former Finance Minister Chidambaram over his assertion that online transactions could not find wide acceptance in India since nearly half of its villages were not even electrified, Modi said "whose faults is he pointing at. Did I uproot electric poles or snap cables in villages which had electricity".

He also took potshots at Rahul Gandhi''''s assertion that payments through cards, online transfers etc. would face hurdles in the country due to low literacy levels, saying, "I hope he does not say that I had indulged in some sort of black magic to make illiterate those who knew how to read and write.

"He never thinks before he speaks and he may not have realized that he has admitted the failure of the long reign of his own party."

Calling himself "Kashi ka bachcha" (a child of Kashi), Modi said, "I am, nonetheless, delighted to see that the power of this holy land has made me work and forced detractors to admit, even if unwittingly, their failures".

Modi is intolerant and go on justifying his big mistake. Demonetization is a utter failure, and Modi is forgetting that he is people's Prime Minister and people chosen him for good governance. He has become quite arrogant and shamelessly he is defending his foolish decision. Instead of finding corrective steps to solve the problem, he is fooling people by his speeches and paid media is glorifying him forgetting their responsibilities to publish real facts and sufferings of the people. Our country has fought for freedom earlier and made arrogant British to leave the country. If suffering continues no one can contain the storm of people's distress and anger.

This 'blame it on Rio' attitude neither justifies the prevailing 'mammoth failure of management' nor does it provide any solution towards alleviating the burden that common man of this country is forced to bear.

The opposition is not opposing the note ban. But, they are questioning the way it has been implemented without proper preparedness.

Another thing, opposition is accusing NaMo as Corrupt and has taken money from Sahara Group. Thus, questing his sincerity of fighting against corruption while he is corrupt.

    Ahmed K. C.,

The opposition is indirectly opposing the note ban. Improper implementation is just an excuse given for their dishonest opposition of demonetization.

Since Nov 8, we have all read fantastic stories of how all the agricultural Mandis are empty, of how trucks have gone off the road. We have heard about how farmers cannot harvest their crop nor sell their crop nor plant a new crop. Amazingly however, there is one stubborn fact. Prices aren’t rising!

Apparently, no trader, no hoarder has noticed yet the opportunity of a lifetime. Hardly any crop got harvested, hardly any crop got sowed and hardly any crop got transported. The farms are empty, the trucks are empty, the Mandis are empty, but the markets are full. Amazing!

In fact, is there one item that people can name that has disappeared from the shelves since Nov 8? From tomatoes to journalists to intellectuals, the markets seem well stocked with stuff for sale as usual.

Those claiming “poor implementation” of demonetization should answer the question about why there are no price shocks happening anywhere? Do they understand what it takes to keep 1200 million people supplied with milk, grain and vegetables after sucking 86% of all currency out of the system? And yet, not a single price shock.

Lack of price shock? Well, you have to understand what deflation is and if enough cash is not made available that's where we are heading for and that can the worst economic nightmare.

I agree with PM. Most of the news regarding the criticism regarding the demonetisation are pure hyperbolic. What people have to realise is that they are undermining the efforts of the govt to curb the money laundering in the country.

If opposing demonetization is helping terrorists, then what is laundering of black money by BJP politicians and others as well, helping corrupt people including politicians of all parties to launder their black money by corrupt bank officials and buying massive real estate properties by BJP politicians just days before demonetization was announced? Is all this helping the poor or good for the country...?

No one is opposing black money. People do understand. But its not implemented without proper planning and at the end only the poor and middle class people are suffering. Its tough for all to go without cash on daily basis.

    Apps transfer is not safe.

Daily purchases of necessary things like vegetables etc. you need cash. It's even difficult for vendors. By the way, if PM can announce the demonetisation, he himself should be ready to answer queries. He is PM and we all respect him. People have voted him and now also want answers. Just accusing each other will not help. Hope the fact comes to light soon.
