Trump conducts tense call with Australian leader: report

Washington, Feb 2 (AFP): President Donald Trump was perhaps not having a good day when he recently spoke with his Australian counterpart, whom the new US leader upbraided over a refugee accord, media reported.

The new US leader reportedly abruptly cut short his call with Australian Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull after criticizing the countries' bilateral refugee agreement and exulting over his electoral college victory in the November election, according to The Washington Post.

Australia is considered one of the closest allies of the United States, and one might have expected to the call to be smooth sailing.

Turnbull insisted today that relations between the diplomatic partners were strong despite reports that Trump had berated him.

The Australian leader refused to comment when asked about the report and whether it was true.

"I appreciate your interest, but it's better that these things -- these conversations are conducted candidly, frankly, privately," he said.

"I can assure you the relationship is very strong."

Turnbull said Monday that Trump had agreed to honor the deal struck with Obama to resettle an unspecified number of the 1,600 people Australia holds in offshore processing centers in Nauru and Papua New Guinea.

There were fears the US president would rescind it after he signed an executive order last week to suspend the arrival of refugees to the US for a least 120 days, and bar entry for three months to people from seven Muslim-majority countries.

"The very extensive engagement we have with the new administration underlines the closeness of the alliance," Turnbull said.

"But as Australians know me very well -- I stand up for Australia in every forum -- public or private."

Trump, a billionaire former reality TV star, is known for his capricious moods. He regularly takes to Twitter to lambast his political opponents, the media and others.

    @ Ramesh S, Mangalore,
    - Madame ANGELA MERKEL showed humane face to a humanitarian situation and hopefully she will get reward for it economically by the readily available cheap labor considering ageing German population coupled with low birth rate. Your point about radical profiling, rest assured Germany is taking care of fake news spread by Russia to dilute the waters in EU.
    - About banning Israeli products this is called boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) as a form of non-violent pressure on Israel to end its apartheid policies against Palestinians. It urges nonviolent pressure on Israel until it complies with international law. (seems u have problem with non violent struggle also)
    - When India faced drought, famine and natural calamities in the past many countries in the world including Middle eastern countries helped her, I am sure if a refugee situation has to arrive, they will be there with water, milk, bread & blanket.
    - If US believes any issue in any corner of the world will affect "US National interest" and acts to force the outcome in their favor, against popular will, then the people in those places have right to emigrate to their "guardian nation".

    - Germany is reaping what already Madame ANGELA MERKEL sow.. its not Mus#m ban, its profiling of Individuals..infact, its good for the community otherwise peace loving people get backlash for deeds of handful of radicals..

    - About Israel, why cant ME countries solve palestene issue permanently..fact is there are two groups Hamas & fatah..both are supported by different ME countries and fight each other..if ME countries serious, issue will be solved in a day..you should also know that Fatah controlled area is mostly peaceful, Hamas controlled area is not..voilence meets voilence, Israel is not India..

    - its not drought plaguing ME, its enemity of two regional powers..who is weaponing IS#S, buying oil, how its transported..how one can blame US/USSR/ISRAEL, when regional powers arms them..ever heard IRAN accepting these refugees, you the answer well.

    - you should know what is "US National interest" is..it has enormous investments in ME..they will protect it at any cost..but, you should know that how US can attack a country which is miles apart..then who is helping them by providing land, air, sea route facility!.. know very well who is bombing YEMEN? its not US..no one talks about killing of thousands, displacement of millions..then Yemenis have right to enter a particular Arab country not US..

.. TRUMP should enlighten leaders like ANGELA MERKEL who dont know how much damage she is making to EU without profiling radicals..Do any one have any idea how many countries totally banned ISRAELI's & their products entering their country and which are these countries..if religion/faith/country is not a tool declare a person as terrorist, then why ISRAELI,s have different yardstick!!..many EU countries welcomed refugees in border with water, milk, bread & blanket.. can we expect from ME countries for people of other faith!..its noteworthy that only in Asia & some siculars showing banner against TRUMP, while many ME countries incl., UAE said its US internal matter..

I have never found an answer as to why rich Middle eastern Kingdoms are not welcoming a single refugee inspite of being Islamic countries and why all refugees are risking their lives going to Europe and other Christian country. In Islamic countries they can dress and practise their religion just like their home country without making other communities uncomfortable is what Trump says which makes some sense.

    @ G M Hegde, Udupi
Turkey hosts 2.7 million Syrian refugees, more than any other country worldwide
Lebanon hosts approximately 1 million Syrian refugees which amounts to around one in five people in the country
Jordan hosts approximately 655,675 Syrian refugees, which amounts to about 10% of the population
Iraq where 3.1 million people are already internally displaced hosts 228,894 Syrian refugees
    Egypt hosts 115,204 Syrian refugees.
In rich Middle Eastern countries, the jobs are already occupied by Indians and other Asians like me and there is no vacancy for more people considering Syrians are educated and want to work. So the rich kingdoms are helping the UN by contributing to its Budget and also helping Jordan and Lebanon monetarily which already has high unemployment figures.
If only Obama agreed for imposing a no fly zone in northern Syria back in 2013, most people wouldn’t have left Syria in the first place.

For your info, GCC countries are Pro American and controlled 100% by NATO for cheaper oil . They will never take refugees, it's just because these brainy Syrian Arabs would dominate the GCC and control in a years time, which the Americans don't want to happen to protect their oil rights and at the same time avoiding Russians backing these refugees to overthrow GCC Countries. It's a fact. You are just defending it ME just because you share common faith.
