Mangalore, Feb 16: Like poetry, light music too has a unique potential of expressing itself in many ways and is a means of communication, opined Rashtrakavi G S Shivarudrappa.

He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of 'Geethotsava' the 6th state-level light music concert hosted by Karnataka Sugama Sangeetha Parishat in association with the district administration at Nehru Maidan here on Saturday February 16.

He lauded the support extended by television and radio in popularising light music and appreciated the fact that the light music arena is brimming with talents who have been contributing to the field.

He was of the view that poetry can also be referred to as music to an extent. Poetry is not only immortal but also traditional. The development of the genre dates back even to the days of mythological figures like Luva-Kusha, sons of Lord Rama.

Light music has the responsibility of imparting the pure form of music and thus to create a healthy society. Music at present is being commercialized and therefore light music artistes should strive to retain its pure form, he added.

Veteran singer B K Sumitra delivered the presidential address and deputy commissioner M Maheshwar Rao welcomed the gathering.

Na Da Shetty, HoD of Kannada, St Aloysius First Grade College, Sucharita Shetty, president of zilla panchayat and others were present on the occasion.

Aparna and Harish compered the programme.
