Panaji, Feb 20: Former Goa minister and Taleigao constituency legislator Atanasio Monserratte along with Mayor of corporation of city of Panaji Tony Rodrigues was detained tonight after a mob attacked Panaji police station setting three vehicles on fire.

The situation in Panaji and surrounding areas remained tensed as police launched a major operation to arrest the supporters of Monserratte who had earlier attacked the police station.

Taleigao, a sub urban locality dotting Panaji city, had turned into fortress after police themselves ransacked Bunglow owned by Monserratte and detained his wife, Jeniffer.

The trouble began this evening when two gangs had clashed against each other at Taleigao. Police later had arrested two persons who were kept at the police station.

This irked Monserratte supporters who led a huge morcha at the police station. The situation went out of control when agitators began pelting stones at the police station. The sudden violence later broke and agitators torched three vehicles at the police station.

In an attempt to curb the violence, police resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas to disperse the mob.

After the mob had dispersed, police went to Monserratte's residence and ransacked his bunglow detaining his wife, who is also a political activist.

Later, Monserratte, who had arrived with the city Mayor was also detained by the police.

Unexpectedly, police had taken charge of the entire city and media was asked to leave the place.

The situation remains tensed in the city and surrounding areas as police have continued picking up monserratte supporters.

To the person who wrote "A mob won't march up to the police station unless there is a real reason for protest, as always the police are slow to arrest the criminals and that really gets to the common man at some point" Well, I agree. They have been terribly slow in arresting Babush for all his earlier misdeeds. May be the rest of the citizens who are not goondas should have taken a morcha to the police station for that.

By no means am I sympathetic of Babush Monseratte but the behaviour of the Goa Police is appalling!!! I didnt know we were a police state where cops could barge into someone's house, ransack private property and assault a young man because his parents are political activists!

If Babush took the law in his hands, the cops trampled everything the law stands for under their bungling feet. How can any citizen of the state applaud such behaviour is beyond my understanding! The person who says the police did an "excellent Job" is obviously delusional and is allowing his petty dislike for Babush's past record to condone such disgraceful acts of violence.

What will stop these hooligans in uniform from entering our homes and beating up our families next?? Vigilante justice as shown by the Babush supporters by attacking the police station was absolutely wrong and should be punished but ecouraging the "upholders of the law" to retaliate(?!) is ludicrous! Brings to mind a few words from Gandhi "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." Violence used against violence is the act of uneducated degenerates.

If Babush can take law in his hands to demand police action, why could he and his own goons not take action against those who attacked Ryan? This guy only wants to create a ruckus and show his domination. The people of Goa allow him to hijack the whole state.

Goa Police have always been notorious for beating innocent people and this wont change with the type of culture they follow. Human Rights are flouted in Goa every single day as police take the law in their own hands. This is a shame and the Government is in colaboration with the Police. WHAT A SHAME GOA HAS TO PUT UP WITH THIS.

I believe the cops acted wrongly first by arresting the persons who filed the complaint ! A mob won't march up to the police station unless there is a real reason for protest, as always the police are slow to arrest the criminals and that really gets to the common man at some point.
