Mangaluru, Feb 12: "Science is a vast field. It is not confined to any caste or colour. Real science is about researching everything from evolution of man to various inventions through humanitarian perspectives and inspiring people," said chief of Jawaharlal Advanced Research Institute, Bengaluru and Bharath Ratna recipient Chinthamani Nagesh Ramachandra Rao, popularly known as C N R Rao.

Prof Rao was delivering the 'Yenepoya Foundation Day Lecture' after inaugurating the Yenepoya Narcotics Educational Foundation of India programme at Yenepoya Auditorium in Deralakatte on Saturday, February 11.

"Inventions have been taking place in India from time immemorial. If we study history, we learn that scientists went around the world and brought scientific invention to the people. J C Bose had introduced crescograph before electron was invented. Science is like a spark. Inventions can happen anytime. In addition to the hard work and discipline involved in scientific research, science should emphasise human values," Prof Rao said.

"India is a poor country. Yet we have scientists who are much superior compared to their counterparts in other nations. Science education and modernity are good, but we also need to have goals and ambitions in life. Only fools run after fast money. Let science inspire you positively, not for the wealth it may bring," he added.

Prof Rao was bestowed honorary doctorate of science from Yenepoya University on this occasion by chancellor Y Abdulla Kunhi

Dr Indumati Rao was the chief guest. Vice-chancellor Dr Vijaya Kumar welcomed. Dr Srikumar Menon proposed the vote of thanks.
