Moodbidri, Feb 14: A whirlwind which suddenly appeared in the newly created cricket ground in Swaraj Maidan here at around 2 pm on Monday February 13 took the people by surprise. The force of the whirlwind that was high, mighty, and was carrying red dust, made the people to watch in awe with bated breath, while some also turned panicky.

The ongoing game of cricket, which was a part of the cricket tournament organized by Eleven Cricketers here was stopped for sometime due to this sudden phenomenon. The onlookers felt thrill and joy too at the beautiful sight of red dust moving rapidly in cylindrical pattern.

In scientific parlance, the phenomenon occurs when density of wind and pressure falls considerably with the increase in temperature in a region. When the density of air plummets, wind from all around rushes to fill the void. At this point, the wind cannot move forward and therefore starts to spin around and move upward. Such whirlwinds have been occurring here occasionally even when Swaraj Maidan happened to be a hillock earlier, but the unique feature of Monday's occurrence was its tremendous force. The whirlwind acquired thick reddish hue because of the dust that has gathered in the playground.

The dance of the whirlwind which continued for about five minutes started to move away from the ground even as it lost its force when it moved behind the vegetation near the BSNL tower and disappeared from people's sight.
