Mangaluru, Feb 28: United Forum of Bank Unions (UBFU) covering public sector banks and several other banks has given a call for bank strike on Tuesday February 27. Although Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh and National Organization of Bank Officers have not joined the strike call, considering that the UBFU has an overwhelming membership of nearly one million employees and officer, the strike today is expected to be total.

Private banks like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, cooperative banks and others will function normally. Their clearing operations however, will be impaired.

The agitating bank workers are up in arms at the alleged effort being made by successive governments to shift control of public sector entities to private sector and foreign investors in the name of reforms. It has alleged that the government has been ammending labour laws to suit their needs, curbing trade union rights in banking sector etc. The employees and officers are also demanding compensation for extra work hours put during the period of demonitisation exercise. Appointment of workmen and officer employee directors to the boards of banks, adequate recruitment in all categories, removal of ceiling on gratuity, income tax exemption for superannuation benefits, improvement in pension benefits etc are the other demands which the unions say have not been met. Appointment of family members on compassionate grounds, which is approved by central government, has not been implemented by several banks, the unions allege.

Fixing of accountability in case of willful default, huge bad loans, and criminal action against willful defaulters etc are the other demands of the workmen and officer employees. UBFU says that it is compelled to go ahead with the strike as the Indian Banks Association and government representatives showed lack of responsibility at the concilliation meeting held with Chief Labour Commissioner at Delhi on February 21 this year.

Unless the attitude change and employees are well trained Govt bank services will not improve. If performance driven compensation package comes into place in these banks they will change or will have to step out.

Also these Govt banks have some ridiculous rules like you have to cash bearer or self cheques in same branch etc. In these system driven days these rules do not have any basis.

If it continues like this time will soon come when these banks will loose business and employees will be in trouble.

See how hard PSU banks work:
I have an account with ... Bank, I wrote the slip and put one Canadian Dollar cheque in the usual box and after one week they called me, to give it to foreign exchange counter, which is in the same branch. The cheque was not credited even after 15 days and when inquired they said, they made the mistake and sent it for clearance writing US $.

On Thursday, I deposited 1.5 L for tax saver under 80C and in pvt banks it takes 15 minutes. They told me to come today, since Friday was holiday, Saturday was 4th Saturday, Sunday in between. Monday they would prepare and today they called me. Now today is strike day.

Please dont waste your time that good there are privatized banks today PSU are so sleepy that they just dont want to work hard ..do as minimum as possible and gain maximum . This has to change especially the banking sector and metros none prefer any of the PSU banks . Rural areas they can survive as private banks have not yet started but once they reach tier 2 and 3 town PSU will have to shut down .

Employees in private sector work usually for ten hours per day for one tenth of the salary paid to bank employees for such work. Bank employees also enjoy perks like petrol allowance, house rent allowance, excursion allowance etc. Yet the bank employees are not content.
