Mangaluru, Mar 9: We have been witnessing educational institutions vying with each other in getting better results by taking additional classes, giving special attention to certain students and making them to work on probable question papers. The women's PU college at car street in the city has stood apart by bringing out a unique scheme of rewarding students scoring high marks.

The college has announced an offer of air travel for any student in the high school section of the PU college who score over 90 percent marks in SSLC examination, a leading daily has reported. This scheme is being implemented by the teaching staff of the college with the support of donors to encourage students to aim for higher marks and come out with flying colours.

Last year, it is said, a lady teacher had told the girl students that she would arrange to take any student who scores over 90 percent to Bengaluru by air. Three students, Prathvi, Sushma and Ayishatul Shabnam, performed better than the bench mark set for them. The promise was kept, and the girl students were taken to Bengaluru by flight by head teacher, Rajeevi, and social science teacher, K Sujata Hegde. The students were taken around tourist spots at Bengaluru for two days. However, the return journey was by bus.

The offer has been continued this year too, and it has given rise to a newfound confidence and learning spirit among the students. The institution achieved 100 percent result last year perhaps for the first time, and the students of this PU college scored over 90 percent marks in SSLC examination, another first. Realizing the potential of the students, this time, the eligibility bar has been further raised to 600 marks. The teaching staff are planning to take the student to either Bengaluru and Belagavi, it is said.

The offer of air travel appears lucrative for the students of institutions like these, as the income levels of their families generally are lower. The offer has given rise to a desire to excel among the students, which in turn results in hard work and better results. Eventually, the students stand to benefit in the long run. The teaching staff of the institution deserve a pat on their backs for this initiative.
