Bengaluru: After Amma Canteen in TN, get set for Namma Canteen in Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Karnataka government is mulling the prospect of starting its own 'Namma Canteen' a la 'Amma Canteen' of Tamil Nadu (TN) in the city initially on experimental basis.

These canteens are aimed at providing access to food at cheap rates to people at places frequented by poor people like leading hospitals, bus stands and other places. The government has been considering the proposal to have these canteens on the model of Tamil Nadu. In all likelihood, state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, might announce this scheme in his budgetary address on March 15.

The 'Amma Canteen' scheme implemented by the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, has become extremely popular. This scheme has succeeded in filling the bellies of poor people at affordable prices.

The scheme of feeding the poor by charging only token amount for the food servedto them at the canteens, had been conceptualized long back. The concept, which took shape when Dinesh Gundu Rao was the food minister here, has been under active consideration as the current minister,U T Khader, too is staunchly in support of introducing this scheme.

He needs publicity in short, not with real intention. When you come close to election, you do all kind of gimmicks.

Karnataka leaders do not have an original idea in their heads. They are best at copying ideas from the leaders of Tamil Nadu. After Tamil Nadu demanded the reversal of the Jallikatu ban, Karnataka asked for the ban of Kambala to be lifted. Now Siddu has decided to copy Jayalalitha's canteen idea.

What a sharp contrast to the BJP rule! BJP tried to grab land and resources as their term was coming to an end and divided people. There were so many scandals. Look at the gesture of Siddharamaiah! Food for the hungry is the need. The rich will always call this a public loot. Those who die of overeating will never have concern for the hungry. Through this one gesture Siddharamaiah will win the hearts of the SCs/STs/most backward classes. How will the upper castes understand the hunger of the discriminated castes since they have not gone through it at all. In the past I did not vote for the Congress. I have now decided to vote for the party to free the state from those who are anxiously waiting to divide the state and loot its resources. We are proud of you Siddharamaiah. Your caste as a Kuruba helps you to identify with the hungry.

Good initiative by the Govt. for the people who can afford the food. Middle class people will be more happy to eat food with easy price. Question is will it be run by franchisee or corrupt people with political relation.
