Kasargod, Mar 5:
As part of the ongoing festivities at the Enmakaje Beedina Mane near Perla here, the customary annual 'Nemothsava' of the traditional Pilichamundi Raktheshwri and Parivara Daivas of the Enmakaje house was conducted on Tuesday March 4.

The festivities,  which began with the grand inaugural ceremony of the new 'Gopuram' on Thursday February 28, will conclude on Wednesday, March 5 with the 'Raktheshwari Daiva Nema' at the Enmakaje Beedina house precincts.

In accordance with the programme schedule, March 4 morning began the colourful and auspicious 'Pilichamundi Daiva Nemothsava' with approximately 5,000  people from the family, the surrounding 'gramas' (villages) and from within the state as well as outside gracing the occasion.

Throngs of devotees could be seen all through the day observing and partaking in the ceremony with complete devotion and faith. Towards the end of the day 'Sathyadevatha Korathi Guliga Nemothsava' was also conducted which was observed with great devotion by all those present at the venue.

Sudhir Shetty of UAE Exchange speaking exclusively to Daijiworld while explaining the history of the ancient Nemothsava tradition of Enmakaje informed, 'The Enmakaje house has a history of more than 450 years from where the rich tradition of the nine 'Bhootas' can be traced. These bhootas are Pilichanmundi (the Rajan or main bhoota), Gulige, Sathyadevatha, Korathi, Posa bhoota, Chalena bhoota, Rakhtheswari bhoota among others' he added.

Although for ages the Nemothsava was performed albeit on a small scale, the turning point came in 1994 when a fire destroyed the sacrosanct temple edifice and after a lot of deliberation from family elders, work began on the reconstruction of temple which was completed in 2004. Since then every year the customary 'Nemothsava' ceremony has been performed mostly on March 3, 4 and 5, but now it is done on March 1 and 2 as well to add the 'sangeetha bhajana' and 'kirthana' functions as well.  The present 'yejamane' (family head) is Enmakaje Vishwanath Rai representing the entire clan at all functions and religious ceremonies being conducted, informed Sudhir Shetty.

According to Shetty performing this 'Nemothsava' ceremony as obeisance to 'daivas', invokes its blessings not just for the immediate family, but the entire 'grama,' as well as those who come to participate in the function from outside. In fact it is customary for all those who come to this function to take the 'prasadam' as well as partake in meals served on plantain leaves after the ceremony. 'For all five days of the function there is provision made for meals, tea, snacks to be served to the guests and locals,' he added.

'It is necessary to preserve this ancient tradition. It is heartening to know that the current generation has an understanding of all this, along with a commitment to carry it forward to the next generation with the same determination and 'bhakti' as was done in earlier times,' he averred.
