Panaji: UK Teen's Death - Govt Orders Second Autopsy

Panaji, Mar 6: The state government on Wednesday ordered a second autopsy into the death of a 15-year-old British girl who was found dead under suspicious circumstances on a popular beach in Panaji after her parents suspected foul play.

Scarlette Eden Keeling's family members had pressed for the second autopsy after meeting Chief Minister Digamber Kamat suspecting foul play in the matter.

Her mother, Fionne Mackeown, had vowed to get justice for her daughter.

The teenager was found dead on February 18 and police had registered a "death-by-drowning case." However, the family members said the body had bruises and expressed unhappiness over the police investigation.

"I have ordered a second autopsy and we will wait for the report," Kamat told reporters. The CM said if required, he would personally monitor the progress in the case.

Scarlette's family, which met Kamat on Tuesday, sought appointment of a senior police official to investigate the case which had hitherto been handled by a Sub-Inspector.

"I will personally supervise the case while we have asked an inspector to carry out the probe," Superintendent of Police (North) Bosco George said.

The department would be able to comment further only after going through the second autopsy report, he said.

Meanwhile, Scarlette's family members expressed happiness about the way Chief Minister responded to their request.

"He has assured us that he will go to the root cause of the death," Fionna said.
