Firebrand cleric Adityanath as UP CM is shocking rebuke to minorities: US daily

New York, Mar 24 (PTI): The move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party to name "firebrand Hindu cleric" Aditya Nath Yogi as Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister is a "shocking rebuke" to religious minorities, a leading US daily said on Friday in its editorial.

The New York Times in the highly critical editorial titled 'Modi's Perilous Embrace of Hindu Extremists' said since he was elected in 2014, Modi has played a "cagey game, appeasing his party's hard-line Hindu base while promoting secular goals of development and economic growth".

There was no immediate comments on the editorial from the Prime Minister's office in New Delhi. While there were "worrying signs" that he was willing to humour Hindu extremists, the editorial said Modi refrained from overtly approving violence against the nation's Muslim minority.

However, Modi "revealed his hand" when emboldened by a landslide victory in recent elections in India's largest state of Uttar Pradesh, his party named a "firebrand Hindu cleric, Yogi Adityanath, as the state's leader", it said.

"The move is a shocking rebuke to religious minorities, and a sign that cold political calculations ahead of national elections in 2019 have led Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party to believe that nothing stands in the way of realising its
long-held dream of transforming a secular republic into a Hindu state," the editorial said.

It noted that Aditya Nath has made a political career of demonising Muslims. The editorial said Uttar Pradesh badly needs development and not ideological showmanship.

It said Aditya Nath has sounded the right notes by saying that his government will be for everyone and not specifically for any caste or community.

"But the appointment shows that Modi sees nocontradiction between economic development and a muscular Hindu nationalism that feeds on stoking anti-Muslim passions," the editorial added.

In a criticism, it said Modi's economic policies have delivered growth, but not jobs at a time when India needs to mgenerate a million new jobs every month to meet employment demand.

"Should Adityanath fail to deliver, there is every fear that he and Modi's party will resort to deadly Muslim-baiting to stay in power, turning Modi's dreamland into a nightmare for India's minorities, and threatening the progress that Modi has promised to all of its citizens," it said.

NYT is supposed to concentrate of increasing acts of racism in their own country instead projecting India as intolerant and unsafe for minorities. Racial violence in the guise of fighting or preventing radical terrorism is not less than intolerance. Given today’s scenario minorities are safer in India than in the Middle East or US.

Just like you never know what to expect from a Bollywood movie with a U/A certification by the CBFC, the BJP too has left its spectators confused after giving a Vikas/Hindutva stamp (read Yogi Adityanath) to its brand of politics in Uttar Pradesh.

And now that the great tamasha has opened to packed theatres, there is little that the audience can do but sit through the show.

The torture would still have been easier to bear had the right-wing sycophants and BJP spin doctors in the media not jumped into painting a picture of the Uttar Pradesh CM as the next vikas purush — someone who has nothing against Muslims (except that he wants them out of Uttar Pradesh and the country) and is, in fact, all about work and no foul play.

Before becoming the CM, Adityanath was at least honest about his feelings and the kind of human being he is. Post his elevation, he is being forced to cover his bigotry with "sabka saath, sabka vikas" chants.

At least give the man his due. He has campaigned and won all past elections based on his divisive politics, why sacrifice his core beliefs now? They did the same to Narendra Modi, who suddenly transformed into the (original) vikas purush from a chief minister known for the carnage of Muslims by Hindutva followers in the state during his tenure.

India is known for its rich mythology, and Indians for their ability to create urban legends. It's such a shame!

I think the US media has to see their own country before finding fault in the political system or leaders of India.
They need not worry about the minorites in India, we are safe and happy here.

We Indians have to give the USA NYT befitting reply. They should protest in front of their office in USA.

All Indians living in USA should come back and serve their motherland. This will show, we Indians are ready to sacrifice for the self respect for our Country.

Also we should boycott visiting , travelling, sending our kids for higher studies, seeking employment in USA.

They should concentrate on their country rather than others. When MODI became PM they said same thing. Reality is after become PM there is no riots but under lovely secular Obama there were dozens of riots mass killing police killing. Yogi just now became CM so it's not fare to say he will do partiality but under Trump every non white irrespective of faith feeling threatened beaten killed!

They probably would have just concentrated on their country and left us alone.

But we are desperate for their visas.

When they said a few things on the H1B visas, our industry and the Government is begging 'them' to reconsider allowing us to send 150,000 people on these visas.

Our dear PM went to their Madison Square Garden and said Inda can send as many people as America has vacancies.

So may be we should stop our people traffic, and they will not care how we run our show.

The manner in which this man has started his stint reinforces the fear that he is more interested in fomenting communal tension than developing the state. His appointment is certainly not in the national interest. This drives home two points. Either the PM is totally at the beck and call of the RSS or he is slowly releasing his hidden agenda he had in mind but not made public. Either way, this does not redound to his credit and is something the peace loving citizens of this country could have been spared of.
