Mangalore: Accident at State Bank - Varsity Students Take to Streets

Mangalore, Mar 11: Sameer Shukla, assistant commissioner (AC) of Dakshina Kannada, on Tuesday March 11, visited Mangalore University campus located at Mangala Gangotri, Konaje along with S N Siddappa, ASP and senior police officers, to console the student fraternity who had organized a protest following the death of Varsity student Savita (22) in an accident at State Bank on Monday March 11.
As reported earlier Savita who was waiting for bus at State Bank was run over by a private bus on Monday evening. As soon as the news reached Varsity campus, students decided to stage protest against the private buses which have been involved in innumerable fatal accidents in the district.
On Tuesday morning, the entire student fraternity gathered in big number and boycotted classes. They demanded that action should be taken against the driver whose reckless driving claimed two innocent lives. They also demanded that charge sheet should been filed against them within 10 days and that his driving licence should be cancelled. They further appealed that buses plying between Derlakatte and University campus should not cross 30 kilometres' limit.
The protest resulted in traffic jam on the route. Buses plying from Bantwal to the city via Konaje and buses playing towards Konaje from the city were held up for long.
Meanwhile AC Sameer Shukla has called a meeting of Varsity authorities, student leaders and office-bearers of private bus owners' association on Thursday March 13 to find out amicable solution to the problem. The assistant commissioner also assured that due compensation will be given to Savita's family at the earliest.
