Bengaluru: Govt lists 2,767 liquor outlets for closure on highways after SC order

Bengaluru, Apr 1 (DHNS): A total of 2,767 liquor shops located alongside national and state highways have been identified by the Karnataka government for closure or relocation.

These shops are located within 500 metres of national and state highways and have time till June 30 to close or relocate as their excise licence ends on that day in Karnataka.

The outlets identified by the state government for closure are liquor shops with CL-2 licence (retail shops with licences for vending liquor but not serving liquor on the premises) and do not include pubs, restaurants and hotels. With the Supreme Court clarifying that the ban also extends to pubs, restaurants and hotels, the government will have to draw a list of these places located within 500 metres from state or national highways, excise department officials said.

The state government will also revise the list to suit Friday’s Supreme Court order modifying the 500-metre cap rule to 220 metres in areas which are along highways with a population of up to 20,000, excise department officials said. However, there may not be much of a change as most of the liquor shops in the state are located along highways with high population density, the officials added.

The excise licence to most of the liquor shops along highways were issued prior to December 15 last year and they will remain operational till June 30, officials pointed out.

Of the 2,767 liquor shops, as many as 257 are the government-owned Mysore Sales International Ltd outlets. The excise department has already issued notices to the shops asking them to close down or relocate, the officials said.

Bengaluru city has the maximum number of liquor shops (286)?which will have to be closed down or relocated, followed by Belagavi (222) and Tumakuru (158).

With due respect to the SC order, it will not be so effective as they think because habitual tipplers n lorry drivers will carry their stock or wouldn't mind taking a 500 MTR detour!

Secondly it will give rise to black marketers selling it slyly.
There r good chances of spurious booze getting sold in unauthorized shops!

Even though Gujarat has total prohibition, it is said booze is feely available at a premium!
This ban will lead to loss of business, employment to many petty workers, loss of revenue to the state!!

Now the fight will be whether you are at 495 m or 505m from highway . Difference is 5 m. Why keep distance and give chance for bribing. Ban completely . Govt thinking bargaining for 220m !. If you can ban sale of meat completely why not liquor

This a historical and daring decision of Supreme court confronting all the Govt as well as Liquor lobbys of India. Congratulations atleast by guiding Indian cricket admin and now liquor judgement we can believe supreme court is supremeeee...Its shame to Attorney General to misinterpret and find the lope hole to support liquor lobby.

Govt to come up with a new Liquor policy and think to introduce the individual permit system to by liquor like abroad.and little consideration to only star hotels

Mr Karthik...My view is ...taking the tourism in to consideration Govt may think to frame the policy of allowing in Star Hotels only...For general public let them introduce permit system to buy liquor and allow only to drink in home only. This permit should also have the quota per month.

Mr. Magalurian,Mangalore that is your mind set.I dont agree with you at all by any standard.Liquor has a history of about 1000 years. My grandfather he used to tell me that he started to drink at the age of 20 and he lived for 90 years. He worked hard in the night and lead a very honest life, with daily prayers and of course with a 2 pegs of liquor.Neither he had sugar, nor blood pressure .I had been to a five star hotel for marriage where there was 100 dishes and no liquor I thought to my self what kind of party is this.

Let me correct you. Alcohol has a history of 10000 yrs not 1000 yrs. Kohl is a Arabic word and alcohol was practically available in all civilizations predating all religions that came much after.

It is said early humans must have stumbled upon some rotten fruit, tasted it and become merry. Various studies indicate alcohol came even before humans learnt to make bread or rice as a staple.
It is Baang or sometimes Madira, Somras, Toddy in India. Beer itself was there during early Jewish era and there is evidence that they used to drink some 3500 yrs back. The modern beer is however aerated and drank chilled. Earlier it was a barley drink. Arabs & Mughals used to dine and wine known as jaam in the olden days. Other forms of drinks known as arrack also is prevalent in Jordan/Lebanon areas and rice alcohols in Fast East/China etc. Africa had its own fruit alcohol in medieval ages.

Drinking good alcohol in moderate quantities is actually associated with longevity of life. This is because blood becomes thinner and stress levels reduce. Good liquors are matured for a longer time. Unfortunately most Indian liquors are taxed higher and of low quality.

Having said it is not at all advisable to drink during work time and especially when driving putting lives at risk. Best is in limited quantities after sunset to unwind and socialize.

People must understand that drinking alcohol contributes nothing positive.

Yes, I have heard about a couple of glasses of wine is good. But no medical evidence provided to support the claim.

The negatives brought on by alcohol consumption are too many - whether physical, psychological or social.

Give give up alcohol and lead a happier life!

Closure of liquor outlets or shift/relocate? What about revenue to govt. if they are completely closed. Why the law has such ambiguity?

Good decision by the SC. Accidents will reduce on highways. Does the government need to be admonished or tutored by the SC all the time with regard to safety of citizens? Very sad. All these decisions need common sense for a leader in the Government.
