Mangalore, Mar 15: A two-day workshop on 'Mastering the Art and Science of Teaching Engineering and Research' (MASTER) was conducted here at NITK, Suratkal on Thursday March 13. The workshop was jointly organised by NITK, Suratkal and Hewlett-Packard India University Relations, stated a press release.
After inaugurating the workshop, Dr Vinnie Jauhari, University Relations manager of Hewlett-Packard India, informed that there was a need for capacity building for faculty in the area of technology in order to facilitate the teaching-learning process. This new paradigm of teaching will enable one to foster change and take the momentum forward in the field of education.
The resource person for the workshop D Veena Kumar of the State University of New Jersey, USA was also the guest of honour. According to her the paradigm shift in education came from the fact that the teachers were no more perceived as the source of knowledge. On the other hand, knowledge construction was a process where both teachers and students were equal participants. One had to perceive this reality and suit the teaching methods accordingly in this era of knowledge sharing, she added.
The function was presided over by the director of NITK Prof Sandip Sancheti. He said that it was essential for all teachers to undergo induction or re-induction into the profession, as it would re-orient them in the changing times. Moreover he even said that NITK would look for more such programmes for the betterment of the teaching skills of the faculty members.
Prof A H Sequeira, head of the department of humanities, social sciences and management, welcomed the gathering and gave a brief overview of the programme. Dr K B Kiran proposed the vote of thanks. Rashmi Uchil compered the programme, the release stated.
