UAE: Security Tightened at Dubai, Jebel Ali Churches
Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Mar 19: The Holy  Week has begun  and the Christian expatriates in the UAE are solemnly preparing for Easter.  But for the first time in the history of the country, the  Dubai authorities have issued unprecedented security guidelines to the  Dubai and Jebel Ali Churches.

Since last Friday (March 14) Jebel Ali and  Dubai Church goers  are not permitted to park the cars near the church.  A special arrangement has been made for parking away from the church premises. The Dubai police and the RTA ( Road and Transport Authority) have taken it upon themselves to usher, guide and direct the motorists towards the parking
areas.

At the church entrance , all the people will have to go through a security screening. This will run through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.

Dr Jamal Mohammed Al Merri, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, confirmed to the media that the police were positioned to check people attending celebrations and events that involve gathering of  large crowds at one place.
He ascertained that certain  measures had to be taken to ensure people's safety and security on special occasions and festivities.

Asked whether there was any specific threat, Al Merri  downplayed fears saying that  there was no such threat . He asked the public  not worry as  it was just a normal security measure being taken whenever there was a big gathering to ensure  a smooth traffic movement and also to make it easy to monitor the parking areas.

“The police needed no specific time for carrying out checks. Our aim is not to disturb people while celebrating or worshipping, but  to ensure their safety.”  he said.  "We are checking all locations and every person, regardless of his religion, race or social background," said Al Merri.

Fr Freddy D'Souza, Asst Parish Priest of St Mary's Catholic Church appealed to  the faithful  visiting the church to cooperate  with security officers, and requested them  to arrive at the place of worship much early.

Dear Mr.Justin, Sorry, I do not agree with you in this matter. There must be some alertness after opening of a catholic shrine in Qatar. Let us allow Dubai Officials to do this for the good reason they know very well.

Unless u expect some kind of threat it was not necessary. Police might charge the church with big bill for security arrangements.I lived in dubai and attended all ceremonies. In that case you should have security check outside mosque during eid as well if dubai authorities think this was not implemented on christian community. At the same time this is good, as the area will be free from few trouble makers.drunkurds who attend specially easter vigil..thanks. justin Melbourne.
