Udupi, Mar 28: The Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) at its general body meeting adopted a Rs. 2.26 crore surplus budget for 2008-09 here on Thursday.
The budget, tabled by CMC president Dinakar Shetty, shows the opening balance at Rs. 1.71 crore. The receipts is at Rs. 29.62 crore and the expenditure for the next fiscal is put at Rs. 27.36 crore.
The CMC plans to raise Rs. 3.25 crore through Self Assessment Scheme (SAS) for property tax, Rs. 2.05 crore from water cess, Rs. 1.14 crore from rentals, Rs. 45 lakh from the rent of the Integrated Development of Small and Meium Towns (IDSMT) commercial complex, Rs. 30 lakh from building tax, and Rs. 8.37 crores from development grants of State Finance Commission.
The budget allocates Rs. 1.12 crore for administration and office maintenance, Rs. one crore for repairs and maintenance of existing roads and drains and Rs. 1.05 crore for the development of the 35 wards at Rs. three lakh each. It has allocated Rs. 50 lakh each for repairs and maintenance of open wells, streetlights and solid waste management, Rs. 30 lakh for removing silt from tanks and Rs. 10 lakh each for development of gardens, and sports.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors Vasanthi Shetty and M.R. Pai said the budget would meet the needs of the people.
Roads
Terming the condition of roads in some wards as poor, Leader of the Opposition Jayananda (Congress) said Rs. 3 lakh allocated for each ward for development would be inadequate. The amount should be increased to Rs. 10 lakh a ward. Public taps should be retained for some more time in SC/ST colonies, he said.
Independent member Nityananda Volakadu sought more allocation for sports activities and added that a mini cricket stadium was required in Udupi. Councillor Anandi (Congress) demanded action against mushrooming of illegal mobile shops in Malpe. When Mr. Volakadu demanded action against owners of multi-storeyed buildings who had violated rules, Municipal commissioner Nagesh Shanbhag said he would look into the matter.
