Mangalore, Mar 29: The Beary community is proud of its identity today unlike earlier times, said Abdul Majid Suralpady, president of Ganjimath village panchayat.
He was delivering the inaugural address at the symposium on 'Beary Movement, an Observation,' organized by All India Beary Parishat under the aegis of Beary Research Centre as a part of Beary Research Year 2008 held at NGO hall here on Friday March 28.
Though the Beary community had adopted business as prime occupation for livelihood, now the community has taken lead in social, political and cultural fields and moreover they have also made a lasting impression at the global level, he applauded.
The state government has promised that it would sanction a grant of Rs 30 lac to constitute the Academy for Beary Litreature. Members from other communities have played a pivotal role in setting up the academy, said U A Kasim Ullal in his paper presentation.
B A Mohammad Hanif, president of All India Beary Parishat presided over the programme. Dr Wahab Doddamane, Hamza Mallar, journalist and others were present on the occasion.
Abdul Aziz Haq, chief secretary of the parishat compered the programme.
Writer Sara Aboobakkar, president of Ullal Town Municipal Council Ismail Alekala U A, state Ranji cricket player Mohammad Arif Mukka and football player Hassan Asif and others were felicitated on the occasion.
