- All non-bailable arrest warrants are being executed
Mangalore, Apr 21: The police top brass here has updated the list of anti-social elements in all police stations limits in Dakshina Kannada in the run-up to the May 16 elections.
The police has started the process of rounding up such people and producing them before the taluk magistrates and are securing a bond of good behaviour from them.
Stating this to The Hindu here on Sunday, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Ashit Mohan Prasad said the department had initiated security proceedings against history-sheeters and habitual offenders.
EC guidelines
“The Election Commission has given us strict guidelines and we are working accordingly,” he said. Persons violating conditions of the bond would be rounded up and remanded in judicial custody, he added.
The department had taken up a drive to execute all non-bailable arrest warrants.
The move would continue till such time that the process of filing of nomination started. The department was keen to complete all security proceedings against known offenders before hand. In addition, all police officials had been directed to keep vigil against people with criminal background, especially those involved in communal incidents, he said.
Asked about the communal violence in neighbouring Kasaragod district and its possible fallout here, Mr. Prasad said the police were closely monitoring the movement of people through the border checkposts for the past four days.
Personnel manning checkposts bordering Kerala had been directed to keep vigil on unusual movement of people. Checking of vehicles had been intensified, especially during night, he said.
On the direction given by Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Srinivasan to senior police officials to hold pre-poll meetings with their counterparts across the State borders, Mr. Prasad said he had already held one such meeting with the IGP of Goa.
“I will be meeting the IGP in-charge of Kasargod on Tuesday,” he said. The meetings would focus on security arrangements for the election, he added.
