Mangaluru: Police to undertake drive against tobacco consumption in public places

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 4: The city police commissionerate is expected to draw up an action plan to end sale of cigarettes and other products near educational institutions and their consumption in public places. This was stated by city police commissioner, T R Suresh, when taking part in a phone-in programme recently.

In response to a point raised by one of the callers, the police commissioner said that plans are afoot to strictly enforce provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act in the city. He explained that as per the current plan, the department will earmark one hour each day for this drive. He told media persons that dates would be announced soon.

The commissioner's attention was drawn by a caller from the city who complained about smokers making merry in public places without having any concern for people standing nearby.

A caller from Panambur explained problems faced by motorists on account of numerous potholes dotting the national highway between the city and Udupi. Suresh, noting that maintaining of roads during rainy season is a big problem, promised to alert the authorities towards this problem.

Other issues which cropped up during the day were relating to excessive load in vehicles carrying school children and hoardings on airport road blocking view of drivers. One of the callers also pointed out that some shops in Hampankatta area were in the habit of blocking two-wheelers from parking their scooters opposite their shops by placing obstacles. There was also a complaint at encroachment of public space by a dealership in two-wheelers at Valencia.

Its a good move by the police. Similarly a stronger crack down on drug sales is needed. Though the cops are aware of the sale points no strict action is taken.

There is a liquor shop (Ratna wines) in kottara right opposite “Government kannada medium school”, next to Infosys.
It is hardly 10-15 meters away from the school. This school must be over 50 years old.
This is definitely going to have a negative impact on the students of the school.
Who is providing license to these people to opne wine shops without even inspecting the place properly.
Is it not the open case of bribery?
Can some good officials shut this place ASAP.

Though smoking in public is banned some students and others smoke cigarettes in front of the shops, hotels and some smoke on roads. Then whats the use of banning /prohibiting smoking cigrettes beedies etc. Its the right thing that the Police Commissioner has takken initiative to take action in all such matters which the public complained in Phone in Programme. Also take stern action against those who ride scooters without wearing helmets with double or triple pillon riders.

Health risks are similar to cigarette smoking in nicotine addiction, periodontal health, tooth loss, and many types of cancer, including cancers of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. Cigar smoking also can cause cancers of the lung and larynx, where the increased risk is less than that of cigarettes. Penalise those who smoke public places.

Ok if smoking in public is banned am ok with it. But if restaurants or clubs or other places don't have issues then there's no issues. Karnataka has the highest production of tobacco. Again anyone can smoke as long as you are of legal age to do so. In my country Russia, if you ask anyone not to smoke in public you might be given 2 slaps and sent off. Again there are some people who are against, I can't stop them. Again they just want to spoil business because they can't or don't want to do so. It's an individuals choice to smoke or not. If India is a democratic country, read what it means.
