Udupi, Apr 28: As part of the silver jubilee celebrations of 'Taranga', one of the foremost Kannada magazines, several programmes were organized. The first of the series of programmes was inaugurated by Sudha Murthy, chief of Infosys foundation here at the Syndicate bank golden jubilee auditorium here recently.
Speaking to a gathering here impressing upon all the importance of reading books, Sudha Murthy pointed out that the power of reading books is absent in the electronic media. Books are books and electronic media is electronic media, she added succinctly.
Also on the occasion, she released the first copy of 'Taranga Vasanta Vishesha-2008'. Exhorting parents she advised that instead of showering cost gifts like gold, bungalow, cars etc, kids should be encouraged to inculcate the habit of reading books by their parents.
She also spoke at length about her 25-year-old relationship with 'Taranga' and her experiences with the magazine. She informed that her father's articles were published in the magazine and later even her articles were published. By and by a long lasting relationship developed with 'Taranga', she added sentimentally.
The chief guest on the occasion, Jayanth Kaikini, a poet and writer opined that journalists should try to attract the youth. The magazine should be society oriented and should try to bring about transformation by understanding the behaviour of the youth. Moreover, compared to other magazines the youth should be inspired to buy 'Taranga,' she opined.
Another chief guest at the function, former Editor of 'Taranga', Santosh Kumar Gulvadi spoke about his experiences when he was working as an editor for 'Taranga'.
The programme was presided over by Manipal Media Network Limited, administrative director, T Satish U Pai. Regional manager of ICICI bank, Shekar Rao was another chief guest at the function.
While the introductory speech was given by the administrative editor of 'Taranga', Sandhya S Pai. Executive editor, U B Rajalakshmi welcomed the gathering. Senior sub-editor, Tilaknath Manjeshwar proposed the vote of thanks. 'Udayavani', Mangalore office chief bureau Manohar Prasad and Regina Dinesh were the hosts on this occasion.
The Taranga magazine honoured some of the working staff members who had contributed to the success of the magazine. Towards the evening a “Nadataranga” programme by Putturu Narasimha Nayak and party was performed before a distinguished gathering.
