Mangaluru: Two-year delay in underpass exacerbates traffic congestion at Padil

Mangaluru Jul 15: Locals and motorists were outraged at the growing traffic congestion at Padil. An ambulance was also seen stuck and waiting for about an hour in traffic on Saturday, July 15. In conditions where roads are neglected for prolonged periods, one can only wonder what happens to those in a dire situation, like the patient in the ambulance.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Nizamuddin, a resident of Kannur, who was stuck in the traffic, said, ”Today morning, I was stuck in the traffic for nearly 45 minutes. From a distance, we noticed a 108 ambulance sounding a siren, trapped in the traffic for 45 minutes. I feel that the patient almost certainly died by the time the traffic cleared. Waiting for an hour or so for the traffic to ease out is a common sight at Padil. NHAI is directly responsible for the dilapidated roads. Even after frequent complaints to the concerned officials, they have not responded and repaired the roads. We will wait for another week, then will plan to stage a protest about it."

Prakash, a resident of Padil, said, ”Whether it is morning, noon or night, the roadblock remains the same. Yesterday, when I was plying to Farangipete, the traffic was extended up to Alape, a kilometre away from Padil railway bridge. I had to wait for an hour to cover the one-kilometer stretch. If this is the condition of the traffic in the day, students and workers both will not reach their destination in time. This monsoon, the situation has become even more grave."

This has been a recurrent problem for people who ply on the route on a regular basis. Passengers and motorists spend up to several hours in the congestion before they reach the two-lane road 100 metres beyond the railway bridge at Padil.

The problem began with the construction of the railway underpass there, two years ago. Bad condition of the road adds to the misery.

The railway underpass which was to be functional by March 2017, remains work-in-progress. The construction of the alternate route, another railway underpass, was further delayed as the Palakkad railway division had planned to start track doubling work.

Due to incomplete work, the concerned road has grown narrower, making it difficult for vehicles to ply with ease. Moreover, this monsoon, the road was filled with potholes, turning into a nightmare for the motorists. The monsoon caused soil around to loosen and flow down to the road, making it a mucky stretch.

    Dear authorities and concerned politicians,
Yes, please ask me the torture one has to go through on an everyday basis on this road. I commute on a daily basis to my office on this route and getting stuck in the crawling traffic is a daily nightmare now. To add more to the woes, the road is filled with potholes as well as the construction work going on has added more to the misery of commuters. Its a circus on daily basis for motorists when they try to avoid pot holes filled with sludge. I can only pray for all those who ride on a two wheeler on this stretch. I have stopped riding my two wheeler and started using my car due to this very reason. God save the patients in the ambulances which commute daily on this stretch. The whole route from under the bridge - Padil - Nagori- Pumpwell has become a terror to commute with all this traffic congestion. The other deviation to Pumpwell, that is Nanthoor, is also no better. Please save us of this torture and do justice to the taxes we are paying to the government.

Throughout Mangalore, we get to see traffic congestion, honking horn by impatient motorist, Buses/trucks racing with with shrill horns to overtake and racing ahead, traffic moving at a snail pace will totally pollute surrounding areas with dust, carbon monoxide and other pollutants. Living in Cities is least desirable. But till more and more people prefer to settle around heart of the City. I think for elderly people it’s a night mare to take a walk, or cross the road to approach a grocery or a pharmacy for daily needs. What about Pump well circle. ?

If it was UPA govt in central you would have blamed Manmohan Singh. Now it is because of SC/ST. FYI construction is assigned to private contractors through tenders. There is no compulsion on Private companies to appoint SC/ST.

This contact was public they are not accountable for for and delays. If it was private they can't make much delays since they will not be given contract in future

Not only this woork all developental and petty nature of works take time dragging the work for months and years inconveniencing the public. Somebody has to watch see the progress of work weekly and take action against the concerned contractor. By this delay the real purppose is not served.

Now a days most of the work is doing by unskilled persons. Workers on the field are all useless. Tender is given to a company and they give sub contract to unskilled person. No monitoring the work.

Southern railway is the main culprit here. The toll collection should be stopped till the completion of the underpass. Southern railway has to be made responsible for paying toll to the highway contractor M/s IRCON, on behalf of road users.

In my life I have never seen such a mess in traffic which is currently the situation in Padil. Managlore has become Mumbai Traffic. Local Potical Leader should take carr of this issue. Lot of innocent people are getting effected. I pray that something terrible do not happen because of this reckless traffic and me has a common man want this issue to be rectified soon.

Where is our local MP ever present to burn the district but not aware of delay in this stretch to finish.
Where is our PM always boasts - because of his government all things were fast tracked?
We too were struck there for 45 minutes of helplessness & anger about apathy of Highway as well as Railway officials who lack any long term plan or vision to expedite the works they take up within stipulated time.
