Mangalore, Apr 28: An awareness programme on 'Madilu' scheme was held at the district health office for the benefit of new mothers here on Monday April 28.

The scheme applies to all new mothers who are below poverty line. A kit will be given to each new mother, containing around eighteen essential things. Till date around 232 kits have been distributed, informed Jagannath, district health officer while speaking to news persons.

The department has distributed 23, 36, 57, 5, 94 and 17 kits to Beltangady, Puttur, Bantwal, Sullia, Mangalore rural and Mangalore urban respectively. The department's target is reaching out to 800 mothers in the district, he added.

The primary intention of the scheme is to encourage 'institution delivery.' The kits will be available at all primary health centers in the district where new mothers need to register, the DHO added.

Answering a question raised by news persons, Prakash H S, district programme manager said that mosquito nets, bed spreads, blankets, soaps, detergent bars, clothes, sanitary pads, towels, coconut oil, combs, tooth brushes, tooth pastes, rubber sheets to both mother and child, plastic bags and others will be included in the kits.
