Bengaluru: Cannot tolerate attack on Kannada, says CM in video; KDA wants Hindi out of schools

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Aug 1: The state government’s advocacy towards Kannada language reached a new level with a 14-minute video starring chief minister Siddaramaiah as the "leader and protector of Kannada people".

The video titled 'Karnataka Namma Hemme' (Karnataka Our Pride) was released on You Tube on Sunday. The CM is seen advising people to be proud of the Kannada land as well as sending a stern message to ‘neighbours’ who attack the state.

"Our neighbours are our brothers and sisters. But if anyone attacks our language, our land or our water, it cannot be tolerated. Protecting that (Kannada land and Kannada people) is our responsibility. While we should respect every person, we should also make it clear that we will not tolerate any attempt to suppress our language and land," asserted the CM in the video (appearing between 7.50 and 8 minutes).

Siddaramaiah’s contribution towards Kannada from the beginning of his political career has also been highlighted in the video.

"I have associated myself with people like Devanoora Mahadeva, Dr Rajkumar and pro-Kannada activist Pa Mallesh. The struggle for the unification of Karnataka was a long and hard one. A lot of people have fought for the unification of Karnataka and now people are trying to break the state for their selfish gains which I will never allow," Siddaramaiah said.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah’s sudden enthusiasm in encouraging pro-Kannada movements is seen as a political gimmick to gain votes in the upcoming elections.

Union minister DV Sadananda Gowda has termed the Congress gimmick to be "worse than the British". "Just like the British, who tried to divide India and rule, Siddaramaiah is doing the same," Gowda said to media persons.

Earlier this month, the CM appointed a committee to have a separate state flag. He wrote a letter to Union Minister to remove three-language policy in Bengaluru Metro. Metro signages which had directions in Hindi were redesigned.

Later, the Kannada Development Authority submitted a report asking Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd to fire employees who were non Kannadigas.

"Stop Imposing Hindi in Schools"

In one of the latest moves, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) is opposing the three language policy in schools.

According to a Times of India report, Kannada Development Authority Chairperson S G Siddaramaiah was quoted saying, "Now that the Metro issue has taken a positive shape, we will take up the issue of language in schools. Imposition of Hindi is being carried out in the guise of an optional third language, which need not exist. We believe the two-language policy is best suited for the state."

The KDA has also directed universities across the state to make Kannada a compulsory subject in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. They have issued circulars to universities, asking them to submit a status report on implementation of the Prof Boralingaiah committee report, which states that Kannada should be introduced in professional courses, including medical and engineering.

KDA is planning to design a curriculum to teach Kannada from the basics and issue it to these universities. The KDA chairperson has also met the principal secretary of higher education a few weeks back, to discuss implementing Kannada at the college level.

In what way do these people think the centre is imposing Hindi in the state? Hindi is being taught for decades in state government schools. It is chosen as a second language by hundreds of college students. Signboards in Hindi, Kannada and English are being displayed in all central govt. offices and nationalized banks for past many years. Studying Hindi has helped thousands of people find employment and settle comfortably outside the state, especially Mumbai. Where was the so-called KDA all these years? Why this anti-Hindi feeling all of a sudden?

"Tulu (Tulu: ತುಳು ಭಾಷೆ Tulu bāse [ˈt̪ulu ˈbɒːsæ])[9] is one of the five Dravidian Languages [10] spoken by around 2 million native speakers[11] mainly in the south west part of the Indian state of Karnataka and in the Kasaragod district of Kerala which is collectively known as Tulu Nadu. It belongs to the Dravidian family of languages."

    Hey Hi Flavian,

    You did less research..

FYI, Tulu has several features not found in Tamil–Kannada. For example, it has the pluperfect and the future perfect, like French or Spanish, but formed without an auxiliary verb.

Tigalari (Sanskrit: तिगळारि लिपि, Kannada: ತಿಗಳಾರಿ ಲಿಪಿ Malayalam: തിഗാളാരി ലിപി ,Tigaḷāri lipi) is a southern Brahmic script used in the Coastal and Malenadu regions of Karnataka, also prevalent in Kasaragod district of Kerala. It evolved from the Grantha script. Thousands of manuscripts have been found in this script such as Vedas, Upanishads, Jyotisha, Dharmashastra, Purana and many more. Other manuscripts like Devi Mahatmyam, from the 15th century and two epic poems written in the 17th century, namely Sri Bhagavata and Kaveri have also been found in Tulu Language. The earliest available Tulu literature that survives to this date is the Tulu Translation of the great Sanskrit epic of Mahabharata called Mahabharato(ಮಹಾಭಾರತೊ). It was written by Arunabja(1657 AD), a poet who lived in Kodavur near Udupi[45] around late 14th to early 15th century AD.[46] Other important literary works in Tulu are:

    Devi Mahatmyam's(ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮೆ)1200 AD - Tulu Translation
Sri Bhagavata(ಶ್ರೀ ಭಾಗವತೊ) 1626 AD - written by Vishnu Tunga
    Kaveri (1391 AD)

Places where Tigalari manuscripts are preserved: Keladi Museum & Historical Research Bureau, Shimoga, Karnataka, Saraswathi Mahal Library, Thanjavur, French Institute of Pondicherry. Apart from these they are also found in Dharmasthala, Ramachandrapura Matha of Hosanagar,Shimoga, Sonda Swarnavalli Matha of Sirsi and the Ashta Mathas of Udupi.

All the states must make a rule that their talking and writing in state language is must. i.e. in Karnataka, Kannada, Kerala Malayalam, Tamilnadu Tamil etc. But banning language is only playing politics. I am from Karnataka and proud to tell that I know English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tulu etc.I am proud to tell that I born in multi language state i.e. Karnataka. People of different religion speak different language and not like Kerala, tamilnadu that in these state Hindu, Muslim,Christian speak only their state language. The central government is trying to impose Hindi forcibly. If you go to Bangalore most north Indians will look down upon those who speak in Kannada. Most of the Hiring Managers in Bangalore who hail from cow belt region do not give preference to a Kannadiga, Kodava, Tuluva or Konkani speaker.

Few Ridiculous arguments. How do we connect Modi to Hindi ? Modi is a Gujarati like Mahatma Gandhi and we sense Gujju accent whenever Modi speak. Do we want Modi not to speak Hindi and Speak Gujarati or Kannada ? Then which language we to insist for SoGa and RaGa ? Why not separate religion for several other ill treated sects of various faith/s ? Every faith has disgruntled sub-sects with-in. Are we proposing same formula everywhere ? Why not separate flag for each individual house ?
Are we to unify or divide ? Can understand frustration. We have every right to disagree with Modi but Sensibly.
Need of the hour is to come out from Modiphobia. That can only happen, when opposition are ideology based and united for nation, not just for shielding their family/dynasty personnel interest/corruption that they have practiced and amassed wealth at public cost. Lets have a able opposition leader first. Democracy in long run do not flourish with Monarchy, if by chance Modi happens to be a Monarch or People (his Bhakts) make him Monarch tomorrow. Best example was Indira and emergency. Are we united to install/support really capable opposition leader at UPA, who can really take head-on to Modi ? Who is that ? We have no answer. These questions needs to be sorted out first, not just hit and run practice that our current politicians are doing. Otherwise Modi cant be touched for decades at least, as Nitish already said.

Hindi is NOT our National language as projected by BJP. Currently, there are 22 scheduled languages in India Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Meitei (Manipuri), Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu. The States of India are free to adopt one or more local languages for all or any of the official purposes of that state.

Today all 22 languages carry official status and Government documents can be in any of the 22 recognized official languages. This has been clarified by court rulings as well, as for example in 2010 Gujarat High Court affirmed equal role to all 22 languages. India has a common law legal system – therefore, unless overturned by the legislature or a higher court explicitly, the ruling in 2010 takes precedence and all 22 official languages are meant to be taken on equal footing.

Hindi is nothing but a Bollywood language. Modi & RSS cannot impose Hindi by force on Kannadigas and if they tried to do so, Kannadigas will fight back. This is very clear message to Modi govt. But Hindi should not be removed from the schools and schools should start to teach Hindi to the children from 1st standard itself. Separate flag for Karnataka and separate religion status for Lingayath community, this two main tasks before Siddu sir and hope he will fulfil the requirement as early as possible.

Hello... Listen with your ears wide open.
India doesn't have a national language so it doesnt make Hindi as the national language. You seem to look like those illiterate Modi Bhakts. BJP doesn't have strong leadership in the south. You are talking about achievement, atleast this government did not have a sitting CM go to jail.

    Don't be blind!

As per Article 343 of the Constitution of India, India's official languages shall be Standard Hindi (the dialect known as khadi boli) written in the Devanagari script, and English. These are the official languages of the Union of India, i.e. at the Central Government level.

I think illiterate Modi Bhakts who are transparent in their work are better then the intellectual literate's Bhakt's who have looted India for 60 years .

    @thomas
I feel something is burning , looking at the developmental work taken place during last 3 year of modi tenure rather than 60 years of dynasty rule who have filled their treasury and facing the corruption charges .

    @ABDUL RAFIQ
Hindi is the official languages of the Union of India, i.e. at the Central Government level. However, each state is allowed to have its own official language based on its own linguistic demographics.
Official language is one which is designated for communication at the official level.

So which language CM will use to communicate within India ?

Mother tongue is a must but making and using the same for political gain is nothing but NONSENSE. Hundreds of thousand people are working outside the Karnataka and country... Mr. Siddu do you think they forgot their Home language? Better concentrate on States development work and stop involving in DHARMA and Language matter.

Let them learn.., their languages (to serve better), similarly if some one is transferred from other state to our state (karnataka) , they should learn kannada language... .. (its a wise versa). ..
specially this keraleans, tamilians, etc ... they will not speak other languages .. except their language (though some people knew the languages but still they wont speak)., and here we are not forcing them but even they can speak hindi, english .. etc... to better way of communicate ..

    Dear Abd Kasargod...
For your information they Try to speak only …malayalam language,
Forget kannada ... they can speak at-least / as well hindi or english..
and one more thing they are not bother who ever opposite person... straight away they start to speak in malayalam, why they have to speak malayalam ..at least he/she should understand that who is opposite person does he/she knew malayalam first Or Else they can ask which language you know before talking with them.. Which both communicator knew and understand in better way …

We don't have problems adopting foreign languages. But, we can't tolerate our own Indian languages. This is one of the irony of India.

    Ahmed K.C,

I think you dont understand the real world. By only knowing kannada, you will be limiting your ability to work inside karnataka only. what will you do outside karnataka????

And also if i am from DK why should i even learn kannada??? Isnt tulu enough?? Isnt govt imposing kannada on DK in the same way centre is imposing Hindi on karnataka???

''We are proud to bring a foreign bride of different culture, different race, different belief etc., But, we can't accept girl next door because ...............????''

Karnataka State language is Kannada but national language is not Hindi alone all other language are also national language to b correct. Then if centre imposes Hindi in Karnataka they should also impose other languages like Kannada Tamil in north India also. Coming to Dakshina Kannada - Dakshina Kannada in the name itself has Kannada is der so not point in telling that Kannada is imposed in dakshina Kannada.

    Unknown,

I can't accept your excuse for the reason Kannada being imposed in DK. Who gave the name DK? We must rename DK has Tulunadu. We should demand a separate state. Udupi can join us if they want to and we should kick the Kannada language out. Then we can teach Tulu in schools of Tulunadu.
