Mangaluru, Aug 3: Over five years since the attack on the then president of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Rahim Uchil, the district and sessions court on Thursday August 3 pronounced its verdict in the case.
Rahim Uchil had been brutally attacked on the afternoon of March 15, 2012 at the Academy's office in Attavar.
The accused, Mohammed Rafiq alias Appi (29) an Abdul Basheer (27) of Suratkal, have been found guilty in the case. Five others were acquitted.
The court sentenced both to four-and-a-half years of rigorous imprisonment and ordered them to pay a penalty of Rs 1.1 lac.
On March 15, 2012, assailants had barged into the office of the Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy at Attavar and attacked him with swords with an intention to kill him. They then escaped from the spot in bikes.
Rahim Uchil, who is also a BJP member and a leader of the party's Minority Morcha, had given a speech to party members in support of RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. This had led to the attack, and a case was registered in Mangaluru South police station under IPC sections 326, 307 and 34.
Altogether, seven were accused in the case. A chargesheet was filed in 2013.
Advocate Pushparaj Hegde was the public prosecutor in the case.
