SC decision a major blow to fascist forces: Rahul

New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court's ruling on the right to privacy, saying the decision was "a major blow to fascist forces" and the rejection of BJP's ideology of "suppression through surveillance".

"Welcome the SC verdict upholding right to privacy as an intrinsic part of individual's liberty, freedom and dignity. A victory for every Indian," said Gandhi on Twitter.

"SC decision marks a major blow to fascist forces. A sound rejection of the BJP's ideology of suppression through surveillance," he added.

The Supreme Court on Thursday held that the right to privacy is a fundamental right and is an integral part of the right to life and liberty.

This is indeed a great relief for the common man who is already heavily burdened with taxes on all sides.
This is indeed a body blow to those who were bent on infringing on the privacy of the citizen.

The change in tone of the ruling party response to this directive was clearly visible.
It has indeed put the Govt on the defensive and perhaps we may see some progress
happening in the next 2 years .

The SC's landmar judgment which runs into 547 pages must be carefully read and without doing so it is foolhardy to rush in and comment on the limits (if any) and impact of the constitutionally protected right of privacy, as RG has done. To what extent the Central Government is obliged by the SC judgement to protect the right to privacy, especially the information and bio-metric data it has already collected under the Aadhaar PAN card system (which was the previous government's initiative) is still to be decided by subsequent judgments of smaller benches of the SC though the decision is expected before long. The SC is likely to direct the Government to introduce legislation on protecting the information it has collected and to use it only for specific purposes to be detailed in statue such as a Privacy Act and to keep it under strict security at all times, to be used for national security, misuse of national benefits (including claims of OBC status), perhaps even tax evasion.

It is better to wait and see what the SC has to say in the pending cases rather than make off the cuff remarks and jumping the gun.

You are losing ground in this issue and have no valid points to say that's why you are bringing in non related far fetched issue of biometric ID cards. FYI, these cards should be protected by the govt as per law and can not share the information with any body without the consent of the owner of the card in normal case unless the holder is fraud. Same with ATM cards the bank has all the information of a person and should not share with another person. Don't make fool of yourself and gracefully accept SC ruling.

    Swamiji,
The shoe is on the other foot. If you are challenging the constitutional niceties, you must be a constitutional lawyer yourself, otherwise don't engage in foolish comments.

The 'triple talaq ' would have been abolished way back in 1985. However due to the pressure of certain Mullahs , the then PM from the Cong , Rajiv Gandhi did not intiate it . RGs intention was to ensure his vote bank did not suffer and hence made all efforts that it did not reach the supreme court. Now look who is talking.

At least we have the Supreme Court to protect our Privacy . Simlarly it was the Supreme Court that has ensured freedom of Speech in the Social Media. I t will be nice for out High Courts also to give such rulings so that precious time can be saved to ensure our safe gaurds and spare the Supreme Court to deal with Important issues.
