Water from Mangaluru to Bengaluru - final decision after discussions - K J George

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 31: Bengaluru development minister, K J George, said at Bengaluru that the question of implementing the scheme of collecting fresh water from rivers which join the sea near the city and pump it to Bengaluru will be decided and a final decision would be taken after holding discussions with people's representatives of Dakshina Kannada district, fishermen organizations and citizens organizations.

He was speaking to media persons on Wednesday, August 30.

"Water Board has already prepared feasibility report on building dams across rivers at the points where they meet the sea and bringing water from there to Bengaluru. Discussions will be based on this report," he clarified.

He noted that in the past, when Yettinahole project implementation was taken up, it had encountered strong opposition in coastal area. "To ensure that the current project does not face such problem, we plan to explain the entire scheme through a presentation before district in-charge minister, people's representatives, fishermen's organizations, representatives of citizens organizations etc. The government wants to get concurrence from all the parties concerned before implementing the project," he added.

George said that such schemes of collecting fresh water and supplying to cities have become successful in countries like Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Netherland etc. "One such effort is being made in Gujarat, and we too want to execute such a project through Water Board," he said.

Prof T G Seetharam of Indian Institute of Science had prepared a report on the scheme. As per the report, on an average, 350 tmc of water from River Netravati reaches the sea. By collecting this fresh water before it pours into sea, 22 tmc of water is planned to be pumped to Bengaluru annually, based on this report. Seetharam, the minister said, has agreed to explain the entire project with presentation in the presence of all concerned.

This sorry state of affairs could have definitely been avoided, had the authorities/people in the water-deficit districts like Chickaballapur, Kolar, Bangalore Districts (both Urban & Rural), Tumkur taken more care to manage their scarce water resources in a better way.

Instead of learning this from Israel (where deserts have been made to bloom) by following the world's best water conservation/water management practices, in our case, we have done just the opposite by killing (polluting, levelling, encroaching etc.) our lakes, rivers and water-bodies and their surrounding areas. Rain-water harvesting/conservation practices are very rarely followed. In a few years from now, we may not find any real lakes (except in the entries in the Village land records and those maintained in Sub-Registrars Offices).

We may even be forced to import not only food grains, vegetables & fruits, but also, potable water from China, Pakistan or some other hostile country, just to keep our booming population alive.
Hope some sanity prevails, and all of us unite for the common cause to save our water resources, before things go out of our hands.

Why eyeing on Mangalore water when there is lots of sources in and around Bangalore. Mangalore being considered for Smart City and water is always in short every year, we need more sources, let them built a dam and supply water to our city itself.
It will become a flop plan if we reject it at the roots itself.

Aleternate solution : Desalination of seawater by reverse osmosis. The plant is set up in chennai. Let ciivic authorities set up a plant in mangalore so that sea water can be treated using RO methods and that water can be send to Bangalore to solve Water crisis. I think this method is successful and had been implemented across the globe . I think no one will have any objections to this..

Why do you need water from Netravati that feeds people of this region. Citizens in coastal regions are already facing shortage of water and fish . Bengaluru gets lots of rain that can be harvested using alll methods. why do you need to spend lots of crores when you can pay that amount to clean lakes and give subsidy to Bengalureans to water harvest.

The people of DK/Udupi want to maintain their image of being good and decent people. They are loosing in the bargain. The state treats mangalore as some sort of solution cow for the problems in other parts of karnataka. They actually are milking tax from DK/Udupi.The state govt has not done any development projects for this region ..if at all there was any/development it was during the period of srinivas mallya,TA pai and Mr george fernandes.
diverting river water is not progress for us dear george ..you need to pack your bag and leave without looking back ..Its not far from now that the DK/Udupi/kasargod and madikeri districts will carve a separate state very soon.

There is no water in Netravati during summer and people around river are told not to use water for agricultural purpose. In fact they cut the electricity or reduced to single phase from 3 phase so that farmers can't take water from river. After Ettinahole project, we don't know how much water left in the river. What kind of water he is talking to supply from here ?

Going forward the only way to make sure karnataka build channels connecting all lakes and dams.

we have enough water and planning should cover the entire state ..europe the channels are so well connected that water flows across countries when in excess to areas where its less ..
we need a world class consulting organisation to help us with this ...
