Mangaluru: Nitte convocation - Prof Rajashekaran urges students to use knowledge for society

Mangaluru, Sep 10: The seventh annual convocation ceremony of Nitte University was held at K S Hegde auditorium of Nite University on Saturday September 9.

In his convocation address, chairman of SICOT, Belgium and chairman of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, Prof S Rajashekaran, opined that degrees, education and knowledge one amasses during his lifetim go waste if he fails to use them for the benefit of the society in general and the poor and and the downtrodden in particular. He urged the students to make best use of their knowledge for the benefit of the people at large. He also felt that the students are duty-bound to keep in mind the sacrifices made and efforts put in by their parents in providing them education and discharge their duties with total dedication.

The ceremonuy was presided over by chancellor of Nitte University N Vinaya Hegde.

Rajashekaran felt that students of Nitte University are lucky as they got to study under an excellent educational institution where best teaching staff are working. "Rather that reaching the goal, the right guidance we get and the right path we follow to reach there are of more importance," he advised. Accordingly, choosing the right guide is of paramount importance, he said.

In his address, Vinaya Hegde, advised students to remember the institutions where they studied and respect their parents for their sacrifice and efforts.

Dr Anita Keshan got Dr A K Munshi gold medal in MDS, Dr Kong Shu Fey bagged Dr U S Mohandas Nayak and Nitte University gold medal in BDS, Dr Shefali Prabhakar received Mulky Rammohan Adyantaya and Nitte University gold medal in bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery department, Chaitra R Shetty of pharmacy division and science in nursing department's Vineeta Sunny, Saraswati Shreshta of physiotherapy division, Kavya Dithal of bachelor of science, received gold medals while Sonam N Kille of master of biomedicine science department received Dr Indrani Karunasagar gold medal. In art department, Ritika Raveendra Prabhu was awarded gold medal for journalism and mass communication, while Athira Rajeev got gold medal in medical imaging technology.

Honorary PhD (doctor of science) were conferred on Prof Herman F Seilar, a maxillofacial surgeon from Germany and founder of International Children Cleft Lip Palate Foundation, as well as philanthropist and entrepreneur, Lalchand Gajriya on this occasion.

31 doctors of philosophy, 221 postgraduate and graduate degrees in medical, 136 graduate and postgraduate in dental treatment, 123 under pharmacy, 111 in nursing, 33 postgraduate and graduate degrees in physiotherapy, 39 under allied sciences, and 36 degrees in biological science were conferred.

Pro chancellor of Nitte University Dr Shantaram Shetty, vice chancellor, Dr Ramanand Shetty, registrar, Dr M S Moodithaya, dean of K S Hege Medical Academy hospital, Dr Sathish Kumar Bhandary and several other dignitaries were present.
