Mangalore, Jun 5: Here is an organization in the city that has decided to make the World Environment Day on Thursday June 5 a memorable one, by creating a rangoli of the world map with colours.

City-based ‘Kallachhu Prakashana’ has selected the auditorium of St Aloysius College to design the world map in an area of 1200 square feet.

Veerendra, Ramakrishna Nayak and Santhosh began sketching the world map on Tuesday June 3 after which three well-known rangoli artists coloured the sketch designed by the trio. Vidya Jagdish Nayak, Chandrika Jayaram and Sangeetha Mahesh Nayak are now busy applying colours on the map with rangoli powders.

Vidya Jagadeesh Nayak and Chandrika Jayaram have won prizes in the state-level rangoli art competitions. They have been active in this field in the past two decades while Sangeetha Mahesh Nayak is a district-level rangoli designer.

The map has been designed into 16 parts akin to the original map. They have used natural colours and avoided chemicals in this map, although, chemical-based colours are widely used to design rangolis in the houses. But they have avoided chemical-based colours in order to make the rangoli map environment-friendly.

According to the organizers, this attempt is the first of its kind in the district. Moreover, they are confident that there may not be many differences between the actual world map and rangoli map.

Interestingly, different colours have been used to colour different regions as per their geographical distinctions. Around 5 different hues have been used to colour the seas and oceans in this map to indicate blue water. The map will be inaugurated on Thursday June 5.
