Udupi: Missing MLA's Wife Found Dead in New Delhi

Suicide or Murder : Mystery Continues to Shroud MLA's Wife Padmapriya's Death

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Updates at 9.15am, Jun 16

Daijiworld gets some crucial leads :

  • The flat at Kshama Apartment Delhi was booked on May 28, 2008, just three days after election results were declared.
  • Atul Rao and Padmapriya had fled to Delhi via Goa after abandoning her car near Kunjarugiri.
  • After reaching Goa by road, they had taken a flight to Delhi.
  • Atul came back, and acted like helping Bhat in the rescue operations in all earnestness.
  • The police got scent of his activities after they checked up the mobile records and found that Atul and Padmapriya were in close contact. Following the clues, the police reached Delhi.
  • State home minister V S Acharya, who was in Delhi to participate in a meeting of state chief ministers convened there as a representative of the state, was informedof the developments.
  • Bhat was summoned to Delhi.
  • By the time the police and others reached her flat, Padmapriya got to know that her whereabouts were traced, and believed that she chose to commit suicide.

Mangalore, Jun 16: The Mangalore police have now come out with the fact that the episode was not a case of abduction, after the death of Padmapriya.

Close family sources informed that, relation between MLA and his wife was not so well during past few months and things had reached such a pass, that she felt continuing to live with Bhat was impossible, and ran away, duly helped by Atul Rao and Dayanand, ex-driver of Bhat who now works as a driver of a car belonging to a rival party leader.

Her parents, siblings, close ones and in-laws are unable to believe that she could commit suicide. She was a strong personality and close to the hearts of every one of them.

After completing SSLC through Narayana Guru English Medium High School Mulki and  pre university education at Vijaya College Mulki, Padmapriya joined for B Com course at Vijaya College Mulki. As she got married while in college, she continued her education and completed the degree at M G M College Udupi. Her teachers remember her to be a disciplined and bold personality who was very good in academics.

She also excelled in athletics and sports. She has a younger sister named Radhika and two younger brothers, out of whom Rajashekhar runs Bhat's Hiranya Finance branch at Davangere. The other brother Sudarshan is pursuing his engineering education at a college in Mangalore.  Both her children, Rahul(10) and Rohan(7) are students of Little Rock Indian School Brahmavar. Padmapriya also enjoyed her role as a caring daughter in law of her in laws. Sudarshan expressed his shock at the death of her sister as he reiterated that she was strong enough to withstand problems and come out of them.

It is being claimed now, that the police sources had concocted the story of their rescue operations at Malur, to ensure that Padmapriya does not get alerted by the information that the police had come to know of her whereabouts and shift base elsewhere.  The fact that she did not receive calls made to her since Sunday morning made the concerned grow suspicious. Th doors of the flat where her body was found, was brokenopen in the presence of Raghupathi Bhat, his brother and sister in law, ex MLA Sunil Kumar and the younger brother of Padmapriya.

Atul Rao

The superintendent of police has stated that they have taken Atul Rao into custody for inquiry. The fact that efforts were made to hoodwink the concerned by deserting the car at an isolated place, various theories had made about her disappearance like abduction by naxals or by business rivals, and different stories floated about her rescue and the fact that this is the first such instance in the twin districts, has made people discuss the issue at their homes and offices, and take pity on Padmapriya.

As most people knew, she was a disciplined girl, supported her husband in his political ambitions and shares his success, was a hard working lady and a lovable person overall. She also was running the finance business when Bhat was busy with his political career.

The police and on a higher scale, the media ate the humble pie in getting hold of actual facts. Every piece of information received either telephonic or verbal, was gobbled up as truth. Padmapriya's brother Rajsehkhar has alleged that Atul Rao is responsible for the death of his sister. Udupi superintendent of police Devajyothi Roy has said that the police have not yet got conclusive evidence to prove her death as either suicide or murder. A decison can be arrived at only after the post mortem reports are received, he has said.

She was known to be a kind person

Udupi, Jun 16: Padmapriya Bhat, wife of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, who is said to have committed suicide in New Delhi, hailed from Karnad near Mulky in Dakshina Kannada district. She was born to Damodar Rao and Prema Rao in 1977.

The director of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra Heranje, Krishna Bhat, a former professor at the college, said, “Padmapriya was a decent and disciplined girl. Though I did not teach her, she used to wish me whenever she met me. I am saddened to learn of her death.”

Padmapriya Bhat was the eldest child. Of her two brothers, one is pursuing BE while the other is employed in a finance company in Davangere. Her sister is pursuing BBM at Vijaya College.

Padmapriya Bhat was known to be a kind person. She reportedly used to take poor and sick patients to the district hospital for treatment. A doctor at the hospital, who did not wish to be identified, said, “Even though she was a MLA’s wife she was polite. She never threw her weight around.”

It was the Mulky police who brought the news of the death of Padmapriya Bhat to her parents in Karnad. For the family which was expecting Padmapriya Bhat’s safe return going by media reports that she had been traced in Kolar, the news came as a shock.

Rajashekar, her brother, had promised to bring Ms. Padmapriya Bhat home. The family had not received any phone call from Rajashekar, who had left for New Delhi in search of his sister. They were not even aware that Rajashekharhad gone to New Delhi.

The mobile phone numbers of both her brothers were not reachable. The calls made to Damodar Rao’s house also went unanswered.

The family reportedly told the police that Padmapriya Bhat had visited the family on June 2 when a “homa” and “Ashlesha bali” puja were conducted. She had spoken to her family a few days ago but there was no indication of any trouble. Bhat had visited the family in May.

Udupi: Questions Arise Behind Death of MLA's Wife

11.50pm, IST, Jun 15

Udupi, Jun 15: The body of Padmapriya, who is reported to have committed suicide in far away Delhi, has been kept at Deendayal hospital. It will be brought to her home town after postmortem, sources informed.

Meanwhile, the state opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge took full advantage of the situation and said that the state government is  unable to give security to an MLAs' wife.  “ How can a common man expect a secured life in the state? The state government should clarify the issue. ”, he urged.

Sudarshan, Padmapriyas' younger brother told local media that her sister is not a weakling to easily  commit suicide. She actively participated in the election campaign while her husband Raghupati was fighting MLA elections in the Udupi constituency. He is very  suspicious about this incident, he said.

Rajshekhar, her elder brother, who is  already  Delhi, alleged that a certain Atul Rao has been involved in this incident. He alleged that Atul Rao, a contractor by  profession, was in contact with his sister and is directly involved in her death.

Interestingly, almost all close relatives of Padmapriya have  already reached New Delhi. How did they reach New Delhi so quickly ?  Did they have the information in advance? Why was the official missing complaint lodged three days after her disappearance ?

Misguided media?

Earlier reports said that, Padmapriya was found in a resort known as 'Jain Farm' in Malur in Kolar district and a certain Atul and Vijay were held for questioning. Even the police sources confirmed this news. Suddenly, she is now  found dead in a lodge in New Delhi. Did the officials deliberately misguide the media ?

Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhats' Wife Found  Hanging in a New  Delhi Hotel.

Udupi, Jun 15: Padmapriya Bhat, wife of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, who went missing on June 11, is said to have committed suicide in New Delhi.

Superintendent of Police Devajyothi Ray told on Sunday that the police traced Ms. Bhat’s whereabouts on Saturday. The police got information that she was in New Delhi on Saturday. A police team left Mangalore for Bangalore from where it caught a flight to New Delhi.

The team then searched for Ms. Bhat in the national capital. During their search, they reached her place (Flat No 20, Shyama Apartments, Dwarka). No one responded when they rang the bell. Though the team called her on her mobile telephone she did not receive the call. The team then took the help of the New Delhi police and broke open the door of the flat.

“When they broke open the door and entered the flat, they found that she had committed suicide by hanging herself to death from the ceiling fan hook. The door was broken open in front of her husband K. Raghupati Bhat and her (Padmapriya’s) brother. Former MLA Sunil Kumar was also present,” he said.

He said that the New Delhi police would have to conduct the inquest and prepare the enquiry report. This process may be completed on Monday. After that, the Udupi district police would take over the investigation. Asked if there was any suicide note left by Ms. Bhat, he said that a search is still on.

The flat was located with the help of Athul Rao, an engineer in Udupi and a friend of Bhat’s family,  Ray said.

8.00 pm, Jun 15, 2008

In a totally new development , another source  has just now informed that Padmapriya Bhat was never found in Kolar or Murdeshwar, but she is currently staying at  Hotel Dwaraka in New Delhi. Within next few  hours , vital information might be released from Sate ministry.

Since it is highly politically motivated issue, no information from any source can be considered as absolute truth. It is now for the officials to give a clear picture to the public.

Udupi: Missing MLA's Wife is now in 'Hiding' - Officials Silent

Udupi, Jun 15: Udupi MLA Ragupathi Bhat's wife’s high profile missing case, though seen to be a happy ending is becoming more of a frustrating wait. Several questions  still remain unanswered, and people
of the twin districts are  curious to know where is Padmapriya now? It was believed  that Padmpriya was bought to Mangalore for investigation and a large number of mediamen waited outside the IGP office in Pandeshwar to  have a glimpse of Padmapriya after her return.

But she never turned up. No police official was  ready to come forward and answer media queries.
A reliable source from Udupi informed daijiworld that, Ragupathi Bhat has already left for Bangalore. Does this mean that Padmapriya will be taken to Bangalore ?

If it was a case of kidnapping, it was  absolutely  unnecessary to keep Padmapriya away from media.
Meanwhile, a reputed daily published from Bangalore, in its coastal edition mentioned that  the specific spot from where Padmapriya, wife of Udupi MLA Raghupathi was rescued, is reported to be a  Jain Farm in Sampagere village near Malur, Kolar district. The name of the engineer who was taken into custody from this spot is said to be Atul, while the MLA's ex-driver Vijay too has been taken into custody and subjected to interrogation.

It is said that Atul was well acquainted with Padmapriya and that the interior decoration of Bhat's house had been entrusted to him. Padmapriya is reported to have confessed to have gone there, because of
tension over some family matters. There is a likelihood that she went there on her own because of family squabbles. The Bhat couple have two sons named Rohan(10) and Rahul(7).  Besides the foursome, the mother of the  MLA, Saraswati, also lives with the family.

There are also rumours that Padmapriya was not wearing any green bangles and that leaving behind broken green bangles, cash and mobile were part of a well planned strategy aimed at misleading  investigators.

All eyes are on IGP A M Prasad's office and Home minister for an official press release. Could it be a kidnap or is it something more. Only time will tell.

Even if it is suicide (which I doubt), who drove her into it? I felt very sad to see her dead body being brought back to the same house, which she has tried hard to leave stamped with a huge kumkum on her forehead when she tried so hard to get out of that marriage and the rejected husband lighting the funeral pyre.

It is extremely sad and shows how helpless women still are, especially if they are married to powerful people. Why to blame Atul? At least he had the humanity to help a friend, risking everything else. He should be medalled for that.

It is very clear that she was threatened. She went to Delhi, because Bhat did not have power there. She was trying hard to get a job to live and return Atul's money. What other proof people want for her desparation to get out of this marriage? Only goes to show how the fanatics treat women! She lost her life for nothing and the children are deprived of her now. Nothing will happen to the people who goaded her. Atul might be punished of course. Hope he won't be eliminated!

Now that official post morterm confirms that it was a case of suicide we should all perhaps stop watching TV 9 and get back to work. It is clear that coverage in visual media which bordered on vulgarity forced Padma Priya to commit suicide.

Govt should thoroughly investigate what motivated the visual media channels to derail the investigation and who leaked information to TV channels. And if visual media has any links with Atul Rao. Thank you Daiji for keeping us posted on this issue and balanced coverage of incidents without resorting to vulgar / speculative coverage done by TV channels and newspapers.

I don't know how this case will eventually be solved. But I am very sure that this is murder and not suicide. Padmapriya went to Delhi, bought a mobile, took a flat, a car, bought vegetables, dishes to use for cooking, kept TV channel on and then hanged herself!!! Do these idiots think that we are stupid? Why would she go at all, if she had to kill herself? Why did it take so long for Bhat to know about his wife's missing? Why there was such a delay in lodging a complaint? Why did the police give a sob-story about her whereabouts? Why did the Home Minister open his mouth at all? Was it necessary to plant a silly story?

They could have said that the police enquiry is going on. Why to plant a detailed story, and that too why should the Home Minister lie?? It is shameful! After knowing her being in Delhi with the address, why wasn't she contacted immediately? Why to wait for the entire household to be there? The door-breaking sounds like a ceremony!! Is it to prove that she committed suicide? Even if she has done it (not possible from what we know now about her courage and straightforward behaviour), she must have been goaded into it in one way or other. It is also worth pondering that she chose to go away giving the impression of being kidnapped, instead of simply going for a divorce. Did she fear for her life? It looks possible.

She must have been worried about her safety. This is a very sad event. Funny to see the Home Minister arguing that it was a suicide due to depression. How does he know? Where people worried that she could come out with some hidden facts, and her 'suicide' was a God-sent? We can only hope that she, who lost her beautiful life, at least will be given justice.

Secondly if MLA's can't give his time to his wife or wife can't trust him then how about poor people can trust his commitment to people ?? any answer ? thirdly the way Bhat has acted after all this Hi Fi drama, lots ... lots of questions arise on him ? this is height of democracy - when he can't rule his home how can he rule his constituency ?

How can the police sources claim that they had concocted the story of their rescue operations at Malur, to ensure that Padmapriya does not get alerted by the information that the police had come to know of her whereabouts and shift base elsewhere.

If the Police is not telling the truth, then how can they carry out justice work.. This entire episode is a conspiracy and the Govt. must answer all the questions. There are still unanswered questions about the car which was initially found at Kunjargiri… And above all, Home minister's responsibility is to tell the truth.., how can he lie to the public and media ?

Now our Home minister has become a liar and it is very embarrassing. BJP govt. must own the responsibility for this episode and playing with public sentiments. People have the right to know and right to know the truth.!!!

Both Mr Bhat and Home minister should resign for misguiding the public. Bhat should be questioned as he is in total control of situation.. If he had differences with his wife, by looking at his own children, he should have divorced her.

Thank u Daiji for your report as you are the only source of information for me. Please enlighten us on the issue as we citizens of Udupi have the right to know true details

Police can't spread rumors!!.......look at this statement " It is being claimed now, that the police sources had concocted the story of their rescue operations at Malur, to ensure that Padmapriya does not get alerted by the information that the police had come to know of her whereabouts and shift base elsewhere." If the police and Govt. wanted to carry out their rescue operations without Padmapriya knowing that she is being tracked down, why they even had to plant a story that she has been found in Kolar and raise questions about her character, which might have led her to commit suicide if she did. And why did they have to wait till Sunday if they were aware about her whereabouts…..

Doesn't this look like a foul play and a planned conspiracy on the part of Government ? It can be understood that for enquiry purposes Police didn’t want to tell the truth to the public.. but was there a need to plant the "Kolar" story to raise fingers at her character ? If this rumor was not publicized by the Govt. she might have been alive today …!!

It’s really sad to know about the incident. A proper investigation from the competent authorities is required in this case since the episode has left many unanswered questions.

    1. Why Raghupathi Bhat did not realize the missing of his wife for 3 days. Obviously there is some foul play here. 2. How did Padmapriya travelled to Delhi? 3. Who led Raghupati Bhat, her brother and former MLA Sunil Kumar to Shama Apartments Dwaraka where she was found hanging?

The mobile records of Padmapirya, Raghupati Bhat and their aids will give important clues in this matter. The state machinery should leave no stone unturned to reveal these lingering questions.

Oh god.what is happening. All misleading statements.she was found somewhere in Karnataka, then they say she is dead in Delhi. May her soul rest in peace and God give strength and courage to her family, especially her kids for no mistake of theirs they are being punished. This is something like the Arushi murder case. I wish the police all the best to solve this case.

This seems to be a perfectly planned murder case. Now its upto the family how they need to proceed the investigation. There can be many more involvements other than the 2 close people to the lady. If at all she wants to suicide why she should go to Delhi.? It may not be problem of security. But the way the case handled as per media coverage it looks rediculous, one can not fully rely on police or media.

Thanks to daiji team for the coverage- this episode makes us to ask some very pertinent questions. It is very early to say what led to this tragedy and who are responsible for this debacle. One can only give our views. We Indians as a society are in a transition or flux towards modern times and at the same time remnants of the older traditions remain.

This is true when a husband decides that his wife cannot work and has to be dependent on him. Altercations between the couple leads to nasty endings. I am more worried about the political nature of this case. While its Ok for the police to say she was in Kolar( or in Karnataka) to get ahead of the media in cracking the case, anything more than this will be collusion with the parties involved and this appears to be a case of homicide.

The only way Home Minister Acharya and BJP to come out of this in an unblemished way is to hand over the enquiry to CBI. CBI enquiry will not allow the local police to mess up the evidence. In developed countries like USA first person coming under suspicion for the death of the spouse is the husband and MLA should not be an exception. Moreover since he is from the ruling party, the enquiry should be handed over to CBI ASAP.

Condolences to priya's family. Its really saddening to see the way the news of such kind are dealt in India. Every other day we find a twist in the story, be it in Aarushi's murder case or even this one. The media and the other governmment officials must be careful before publishing as it affects those close to the deceased.

First the report was the body was found in Kolar, then in some place near dhwaraka near delhi... Is it a kind of joke to publish things as heard even without proper clarification? Its high time we think about it.

It is quite surprising that media is not asking the right questions about the inquiry and the conflicting statements by the officials. Why there are so many different statements from police officials and the Home Minister. How did Padmapriya end up in Delhi from Kolar? If she was found in Kolar she should have been escorted by police to Mangalore. What about the two male suspects who had been holding her in Kolar ?

If she was reaching Udupi on Sunday how did she end up in Delhi? How come Home Minister who has the control of the state police has no correct information? Given that Home Minister has no control over the developments and it clearly shows incompetence on his part. I think the people have the right to know.

What a twist in the story. Till yesterday night, media claimed that Padmapriya was being brought to M'lore accompanied by police force who was expected to be in the town by 11 am. How come Padmapriya who was accompanied by police reached New Delhi and hanged herself. Did she go to Delhi alone? and if yes, why police had to allow her to go? What police was doing all the while?

This is unbelievable, totally disgusting news. What is happening? I don't have words to explain my feelings - mixture of sorrow and anguish. For no fault of the two lovely children, an unbearable punishment has been awarded to them. They have lost the most precious, invaluable asset in their life. I join everybody in sympathizing these two innocent angels. I pray Almighty to guide us all towards enlightenment, including those who are involved in this episode.Oh God , lead us from darkness to light, Tamaso Ma jyothirgamaya..... In a corner of my heart I am hoping that this news of her hanging becomes false.
