Bangalore: Withdraw False Cases, Farmers Tell Government

The Hindu

Bangalore, June 24: Members of the All-India Kisan Sabha from Haveri, who were in Bangalore to protest against the firing on farmers in the town on June 10, have demanded that the “false cases” slapped on 90 people be withdrawn.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister and Governor on Monday, the sabha members said that the arrested people were innocent farmers and labourers who were demanding fertilizers.

The sabha’s general secretary M. Gopal said that the crisis had been brewing for some time and the authorities had failed to take any action, leading to increasing frustration among farmers.

“Many had already taken loans and could not start work on the land because fertilizers were not available,” Mr. Gopal said.

The compensation of Rs. 50,000 given to the injured was “woefully inadequate”, considering that many of them would be unable to work for a long time.
