Panaji, Jun 24: Five wild elephants on a rampage in Alorna village of Pernem taluk, about 35 kilometres north of the city, killed forest guard Rajendra K Bhagat in the early hours of the morning.

Bhagat was on night duty when the incident occured at 1.10 am. A group of three elephants entered the banana plantation where the deceased was on guard accompanied by his colleagues.

The other guards could do nothing but look on helplessly as Bhagat was trampled to death. The animals have destroyed more than 500 banana plants besides coconut trees and other plants. The government is trying to work out strategies to control these wild animals.

It is very discouraging to learn about the people being killed in various places by wild elephants. Can our Government think of effective measures to control this kind of menace. Precious lives are lost and plantations destroyed and we seem to be mute spectators to this menace. It is time that our government wakes up to control this situation. Joe Gonsalves
