Akali Delegation Meets Governor to Protest Killing of Fellow Sikh

Mumbai, Jun 25: A 15-member delegation led by the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal and member of parliament, Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal and deputy speaker of Lok Sabha, Sardar Charanjit Singh Atwal, met the Governor of Maharashtra S C Jamir at Raj Bhavan, on Wednesday, June 25.

Badal told the Governor that the brutal killing of Barkarar Singh, a private body guard at Mulund in the city, had hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. He urged the Governor to prosecute the guilty and accord members of the community adequate protection.



The delegation informed the Governor Jamir that their agitation following the killing was an emotional protest and hence, cases against those detained by the police be withdrawn. They also requested that adequate compensation be given to the family of the deceased and a job provided to his next of kin. The Governor assured them that he would ask the government to expedite the investigation into the matter.

Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar, president, Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak committee (SGPC), Sardar Ragujeet Singh, senior vice-president, SGPC, Sardar Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, general secretary, SGPC, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, advisor to chief minister of Punjab, Sardar Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, general secretary, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, former MP, Jathedar Sewa Singh Sekhwan, former minister of Punjab, Jathedar Avtar Singh Hitt, general secretary, SAD, Sardar Onkar Singh Thapar, vice-president, SAD, Sardar Gurinder Singh Bawa, member, Gurdwara Board Nanded (Maharashtra), Sardar B S Minhas, member, Gurdwara Board Nanded (Maharashtra), and Sardar Naginder Jeet Singh, were present at the meeting.
