Chennai, Nov 27: The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea by a Bengaluru woman who claimed she was the daughter of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
On November 22, Amrutha alias Manjula (37) had filed a petition in the apex court to allow a DNA test to prove she was Amma’s biological daughter. However, latest reports suggest that the apex court dismissed her plea, saying it cannot be entertained under Article 32.
In her petition, Amrutha claimed she was adopted and raised by Jayalalithaa’s sister Shailaja and her now deceased husband Sarathi. She says she learnt the 'truth' about her birth after Jayalalithaa’s death on December 5 last year through her aunts – L S Lalitha and Ranjani Ravindranath.
Amrutha states that when she was born on August 14, 1980, at Jayalalithaa’s Mylapore residence in Chennai, an “understanding” was arrived at between Jayalalithaa and the family members that her birth would not be disclosed, to “uphold the dignity of the family as they belong to a very religious, orthodox and cultured Brahmin family” and her birth would come as a shock to everyone.

She says in her petition, “It was decided amongst the family members that her birth and adoption will be kept as a secret and therefore all of them, viz., Late Mrs. Jayalakshmi, Late Ms. J. Jayalalitha, Late Mrs. Shylaja and her husband Late Mr. Sararthy took a promise in front of God and amongst themselves that they will not disclose the true facts and circumstances of Amrutha’s birth.”
Amrutha has supposedly also written letters to President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi demanding CBI Inquiry into the 75-days stay of Jayalalithaa at Apollo Hospital and her subsequent death.
She claims to have met Jayalalithaa but never knew that she was her mother. She was told the fact by relatives who were disgusted to see outsiders fighting for her property after her demise.
Deepa Jayakumar, Jayalalithaa niece has refuted Amrutha’s claims. She had earlier told media, “I have no idea who this is. They are fake people. Most of them cropped up in 2002 claiming to be our relatives. I know my dad and mom’s relatives, and I don’t know of any Amrutha”.
Shailaja had claimed to be Jayalalithaa’s sister in an interview to Junior Vikatan in 2014. Shailaja claimed that she is the third sibling born to Sandhya and Jayaram, with Jayalalithaa being the eldest and Jayakumar the middle child.
Deepa alleges that the Mannargudi clan had created these ‘fake’ relatives in 2002 to create confusion within the family.
Deepa claimed that her father had only one sibling, Jayalalithaa. She had said that she was Jayalalithaa’s legal heir and was ready to fight for her rights.
