Puttur, Dec 19: A youth used a novel idea to cheat the owner of a house at Potladka in Kaukrady village on the evening of Monday December 18. In this case, the youth sent off the house owner to his farm for bringing some mango leaves and areca inflorescence and burgled the house in his absence.

A young man, who has not yet been identified, riding a motor bike, approached the house of Elyanna Gowda (70) from Potladka in Kaukrady village on Monday evening. He told Gowda that he was in need of some mango twigs and areca inflorescence as a puja was scheduled at his home the next day. Gowda asked the youngster to wait in the courtyard of the house and left to his farm to collect the things needed, by locking his house and keeping the key in the window sill.

By the time Elyanna came back with mango twigs and areca inflorescence and entered the court yard, the youth hurriedly rode away his motor bike without waiting to collect the items sought by him. Gowda found that the door of his house was wide open, cupboard in which ornaments were stored had been broken open and cash amounting to Rs 50,000 as well as gold ornaments weighing over five sovereigns had been stolen.

After he complained, police personnel from Uppinangady station and finger print experts reached the spot and undertook probe. They also registered a case.
