Bangalore: Godman Swami Shraddananda gets Life for Killing Wife

Bangalore, Jul 23: The Supreme Court on Tuesday imposed a sentence of life imprisonment on Swami Shraddananda who had buried his wife alive in their Bangalore house in an attempt to usurp her property.

A three-judge Bench of Justice B. N. Aggarwal, G. S. Singhvi and Aftab Alam ruled that Shraddananda would remain in jail for the rest of his life. The bench delivered its judgment on the quantum of punishment as a two-judge bench had on May 18 last year gave a split verdict.

The deceased Shakereh, granddaughter of former diwan of erstwhile state of Mysore Mirza Ismail, had married Shraddanand in 1986. Five years after the marriage, Shakereh went missing. Her mysterious disappearance came to light only when her daughter Shabah Khaleeli filed a complaint before Bangalore police in June 1992. The body of the deceased was exhumed from a 100 feet deep ditch from the backyard of her house on March, 30 1994.
